With all the talk of New Year's Resolutions and dieting, I keep coming across advice to keep a food diary. The articles usually point out that research shows keeping a food diary "even for just one day" can aid your weight loss efforts. (I haven't been able to find these studies, but maybe I'm just using the wrong search engine or key words.)
Keeping a food journal has been part of my routine for a very long time now. In fact, I have several editions of notebooks dedicated to logging every morsel of food that goes into my mouth (along with blood sugar readings and insulin dosing, of course).
It's also a cornerstone to the Weight Watchers program. "If you bite it, write it" is a common phrase heard in meetings. My leader, Kim, started what we call "The Magic Traveling Journal." The 12-week planner gets passed around to a different group member each week. (READ MORE)

It’s been quite an afternoon. Everything was going well and on schedule until I flew through Chicago. O’Hare never fails. Every flight I take through there seems to somehow always find a way to be delayed or cancelled.

After all the “groups” had boarded and we had pulled out onto the runway, sure enough “Captain Bad News” comes over the airplane speakers, “uhh.., hi folks, Captain Poo Poo Head here, (that’s not really what he said..) it looks as though LaGuardia is in a hold pattern until further notice”.

DARN’T! I thought to myself, I had stuff I wanted to do when I landed in the city.

Oh well. I just ended up getting some work done.

Basically, our plane ended up sitting out on the tarmac for two hours until we got the go-ahead to depart.

It’s a good thing I had my insulin and glucose and stuff with me.

Nothing bad happened. But it does kind of make you wonder.

I have been having some troubles finding the urge to blog lately. I really haven't felt like I've had anything that I consider worthwhile to share or to write about. At different times in my life I lose motivation to do things. During these times when I get down, I don't want to work, I don't want to take care of my diabetes, and I definitely don't feel like writing about it. But then again, as I write this and begin to feel the relief of getting things of my chest, I guess I do.

I can’t quite seem to narrow down exactly what I want to do, but I know it has something to do with traveling the globe, being around others, and spreading peace. The thing I realize, and that we/I sometimes forget, is there is something to be said about a person who just “jumps”. In other words, instead of losing myself in thoughts of what might happen or where I might end up, or how I will get my (diabetic) supplies…I’m more interested in just living and the experiences that come along with it. The idea of just spreading my wings and flying…no matter what happens.

I checked, double checked and triple checked the TSA website to make sure I knew every law before I made my flight. I found out diabetics can carry water, juice and all supplies on board the plane. I read all my rights when or if they searched me or my bag. (READ MORE)

Traveling can be an awesome thing. I find that when I do travel, I pay the utmost attention to controlling my diabetes. I'm away from home, I don't want anything to happen. For me, the simple fact that I'm in an unfamiliar place without any "diabetic connections", is reason enough to watch my control closely. When traveling I start thinking about what I would do or where I might end up if I got really low. Personally, I guess that is one of the main reasons while I try and take special care of myself and my sugars while away on vacation or business.

This is the realization I came to this week as I was traveling on JDRF business.

Our kids with diabetes should get extra summer math credit for counting carbs. Cereal is quite tricky for a soon-to-be fourth grader.

 

Every morning begins at 6:30 am with Charlie hovering over us.

 

"I'm having a cup and a half of cereal and a yogurt. It's 25 carbs per serving for three quarters of a cup, so that's about 49 plus 13 for the yogurt, so that's (three-second pause) 62 carbs."

 

He starts plugging the numbers into his pump.

 

Susanne, still half-asleep, mumbles "wuhzse bluthugger?"

 

"I'm 88," he says.

 

"toktedadstllsleeephh."

The dLife weekly poll question this week focuses on diabetes and traveling, and asks: “Does diabetes keep you from traveling?”

 

My answer: “No Way! Have diabetes. Will travel!”

 

Type 2 diabetes does not keep me from traveling; neither does congestive heart failure. In fact, I have done more traveling in the last year and a half than I had in several years prior to my diagnosis. The only real limitation that I have is I can’t fly because of my heart. Honestly, though, that really doesn’t bother me at all, because I prefer road trips to flying. Driving may take longer, but it allows for a slower pace, and provides the opportunity to see things that might have been missed by flying.

In less than two weeks my baby brother is getting married. He's eight years younger than I am, and I remember mothering him as a baby. At eight years old, I was in second grade when he was born -- prime time for baby dolls, so when a real baby came into my life I was all over that!

 

I'm excited to travel from Phoenix to the Midwest, especially since I've been stalking the weather forecast and it's guesstimated to be in the 70s there, while it's still in the 100s here (set a record high yesterday of 107 and a a record for the warmest overnight low a few nights ago at 89).

“So here’s the deal,” my mom said in an email. “Dad and the boys go on trips all the time. It’s about time we had a girls weekend. Where do you want to go?”

 

I had the country at my fingertips. San Diego? Denver? Seattle? (We wanted somewhere fairly close so we didn’t have to spend an entire day on an airplane.) We decided on San Francisco. The land of hills and cable cars and Rice-a-Roni.

 

Our original trip was planned for late January. When Mom called to schedule a city tour we found out rain was forecast for that weekend. So we rescheduled. And it’s a good thing we did because it did indeed rain that whole weekend. And it was in the 50s. Rain + cold does not make for a fun weekend if you’re visiting a city you’ve never been to. Rain + cold if you want to sit by the fire in your PJs all weekend is perfect.
