With all the talk of New Year's Resolutions and dieting, I keep coming across advice to keep a food diary. The articles usually point out that research shows keeping a food diary "even for just one day" can aid your weight loss efforts. (I haven't been able to find these studies, but maybe I'm just using the wrong search engine or key words.)
Keeping a food journal has been part of my routine for a very long time now. In fact, I have several editions of notebooks dedicated to logging every morsel of food that goes into my mouth (along with blood sugar readings and insulin dosing, of course).
It's also a cornerstone to the Weight Watchers program. "If you bite it, write it" is a common phrase heard in meetings. My leader, Kim, started what we call "The Magic Traveling Journal." The 12-week planner gets passed around to a different group member each week. (READ MORE)

I checked, double checked and triple checked the TSA website to make sure I knew every law before I made my flight. I found out diabetics can carry water, juice and all supplies on board the plane. I read all my rights when or if they searched me or my bag. (READ MORE)

I can’t quite seem to narrow down exactly what I want to do, but I know it has something to do with traveling the globe, being around others, and spreading peace. The thing I realize, and that we/I sometimes forget, is there is something to be said about a person who just “jumps”. In other words, instead of losing myself in thoughts of what might happen or where I might end up, or how I will get my (diabetic) supplies…I’m more interested in just living and the experiences that come along with it. The idea of just spreading my wings and flying…no matter what happens.

Traveling can be an awesome thing. I find that when I do travel, I pay the utmost attention to controlling my diabetes. I'm away from home, I don't want anything to happen. For me, the simple fact that I'm in an unfamiliar place without any "diabetic connections", is reason enough to watch my control closely. When traveling I start thinking about what I would do or where I might end up if I got really low. Personally, I guess that is one of the main reasons while I try and take special care of myself and my sugars while away on vacation or business.

This is the realization I came to this week as I was traveling on JDRF business.

I have been having some troubles finding the urge to blog lately. I really haven't felt like I've had anything that I consider worthwhile to share or to write about. At different times in my life I lose motivation to do things. During these times when I get down, I don't want to work, I don't want to take care of my diabetes, and I definitely don't feel like writing about it. But then again, as I write this and begin to feel the relief of getting things of my chest, I guess I do.

It’s been quite an afternoon. Everything was going well and on schedule until I flew through Chicago. O’Hare never fails. Every flight I take through there seems to somehow always find a way to be delayed or cancelled.

After all the “groups” had boarded and we had pulled out onto the runway, sure enough “Captain Bad News” comes over the airplane speakers, “uhh.., hi folks, Captain Poo Poo Head here, (that’s not really what he said..) it looks as though LaGuardia is in a hold pattern until further notice”.

DARN’T! I thought to myself, I had stuff I wanted to do when I landed in the city.

Oh well. I just ended up getting some work done.

Basically, our plane ended up sitting out on the tarmac for two hours until we got the go-ahead to depart.

It’s a good thing I had my insulin and glucose and stuff with me.

Nothing bad happened. But it does kind of make you wonder.

I'm leaving for Mexico today on a little (much needed) vacation. This is only my second trip since being on the pump. My first trip went over quite smoothly. I have no idea what my blood sugars ran, but I don't recall anything too horrific. And I didn't have any problems traveling with my pump or supplies.

 

But each trip is a little different and always a little nerve-racking. What if I didn't bring enough supplies? What if my snacks cause a red flag through airport security? Worse, what if they think I'm some terrorist because of my pump? What if I have an emergency while I'm there, surely those hospitals aren't like home?

"So what should we take with us in the RV," I asked No. 3 as I drove her to the sitter one day last week.

 

"Um, cereawl and hot dogs and... um... oh! your blood sugar."

 

"Yes, my blood sugar supplies," I said almost as if I had forgotten.

 

"And skeetles and juice for you," she said.

 

"Yes, in case I go low. You're right." Such a good caregiver.

 

I forgot so many things packing for the RV trip, but insulin, pump supplies, test strips and alcohol swabs were not one of them. I was surprised, actually.

When I inserted the first sensor on Saturday, I thought it might give me a little trouble. It'd been through a lot in the last months (traveling around in my "everyday" case and moving from fridge to backpack to suitcase multiple times). It looked old, it looked like it wouldn't work. But I gave it a shot anyway.

 

And my suspicions were confirmed. It gave me two error messages before showing me a steady level in the 50's when I was perfectly okay. Instead of messing with a crazy sensor and wondering about its accuracy for days, I changed it out. I had an entire new box of them anyway and I don't use them often enough to be upset on throwing one out.

She flew up the stairs covered in traveling gear and paper bags.
"I brought treats!" she announced.
The last time she traveled to Iowa she brought back chocolates from a local bakery. They were really yummy and mostly devoured by my coworkers and I fairly quickly. One of my coworkers really raved about those chocolates, so it was no surprise when the traveler went straight to her office with a bag of goodies.
When I walked into the room where we normally put public treats, I had, honestly, forgotten they were there. It wasn't the same box of chocolates I thought would have been there. Looking at the box of pastries and plate of cookies I thought I might allow myself a treat anyway.
"What are these again?" I asked to the traveler in the office next door.
Coconut macaroons and some other pastry name I didn't recognize. Not being a coconut fan, it was easy for me to pass up the cookies.
