When I made final arrangements to get my Animas Ping my sales rep noted that I should contact my doctor's office about training. I said, "Can't I train myself?" I mean, I'm already a pumper so it's mostly an issue of learning the different features. She is likely supposed to say this, but told me that I should go ahead and take the training. She also mentioned that there is something I can sign declining the training.
I decided to go ahead with the training since it couldn't hurt anything. So naturally when I called my doctor's office they said they don't do pump training and gave me the number for the Animas rep for our area. I was flustered, but shortly got an email from Animas about who would be conducting my training.

Despite my initial rant, Charlie’s week of hockey camp was great. He had a blast. Once we settled into the routine and got the lay of the land, everything went more smoothly. After a week of tagging along with the hockey counselors all over the Princeton campus and dealing with some very badly behaved 7 and 8 year olds, I’m happy to get back to my normal life. Ha! Normal!
As they should be, the other kids were curious about Charlie’s pump. During the week, several kids asked Charlie what it was. Charlie educated a few and at other times, he’d defer to me.
"Does that hurt him?" one kid asked after I tested Charlie’s blood sugar.
Charlie held his finger out, accepted the prick with no reaction and then pulled his hockey mask over his head and darted out of the locker room toward the ice before I could even answer the boy.

It's not often that Susanne and I get out. It's hard to do so with three kids; even harder when one of ‘em has type 1 diabetes. When we do go out, it's usually to see one of our favorite bands playing in Philadelphia. We love music.
We were very excited to have tickets to see one of our favorite musicians - Matt Pond. The weather was great. I was coming home early from work. We'd head into the city a little early - find a place where I could eat and Susanne could watch me eat with mad envy as she slurped her chalky nutrition shake ... It would be perfect!

Which would you like to hear first? I guess I'll start with the bad news and get my whining out of the way first. The scale is up this week. Granted it's only half a pound, but the frustrating part is I have been working so hard at this. I've been following Weight Watchers faithfully since Thanksgiving and I've only lost about 2 and a half pounds. What's worse is I'm starting to begrudge people at the meeting who lose more than that each week. Selfish, isn't it?
In reviewing my diet, exercise and lifestyle, I'm even more annoyed because I'm eating less food (and healthier food, at that), exercising more, drinking water and even getting more sleep than I had been. But I'm still not losing. What do I need to do? I'm open to all suggestions, except "be patient." I don't do well with patience. (READ MORE)

I'm in the middle of preparing a presentation for my computer user group on "Connected Medical Devices" -- that is to say, durable medical equipment that has the ability to connect to a smartphone, a computer, or the Internet for the purpose of maintaining a log of data points, keeping track of one or more patients' health, or helping one manage his own health.

Yesterday I talked about how weightlifting was my key to success. It helped improve my life with diabetes on so many levels. I also talked about how my training these days has evolved and become more specific to my ever changing needs.
I want this blog to be about you and your training. I want to use my Blogabetes entry today as a platform for all of you to give a brief description about the types of things that you are doing for your exercise. I understand that not everyone is going to have the same type of answer. I realize that some of you may hardly be doing anything. THAT IS OK! Some of you may be training for a marathon. Some of you may walk around your neighborhood each day. The point that I want to make here is that this IS A GREAT place for all of us to share with one another the types of things that we are doing and how they are affecting each of our lives.

Saturday was my friend Scott's Tour de Cure in Minnesota, and my last known day for getting in a long endurance session before my ride on the 13th. With the route already mapped out, we are encouraged to pre-ride it -- in whole or in part -- as part of our pre-event training. I have some logistical issues with that, since most of the time I first have to ride to wherever something is, and then I have to ride home from that training. (READ MORE)

Yesterday, I sat in on a diabetes education training class at one of the local children's hospitals. My mentor suggested participating in order to better understand what a CDE does on a daily basis. That way I would know exactly if I wanted to go forward with this as a career.
It was definitely a great experience. Not only did I get to see a close up view of a CDE's job, but I also met some new contacts and opened my eyes to the real world. I don't think CDE is what I want to do, but it's still a possibility.

I could never be a beauty queen. Aside from the fact that I think beauty pageants are ridiculous, I have this horrible flab on my arms that would prevent me from giving that trademark Miss America wave; I'd wind up slapping myself in the face with my arm flab!
It's not a part of my body I enjoy. I've always tried to cover my arms up partly because I don't like how big they are. While I don't envision wearing sleeveless shirts anytime soon, I have decided that a little weight training, in addition to my morning walk, might do my arms some good.
I suppose I was slightly inspired to start this based on a thread at Diabetic Mommy (www.diabeticmommy.com) where someone asked about the different affects of cardio and weight training on blood sugar. From what I read, it seemed like weight training caused more lows than cardio, although no one could really explain why. (READ MORE)

As a fan of Team Type 1 - sanofi-aventis and a Red Rider training for my second Tour de Cure, Memorial Day weekend is the weekend to show my colors and come out to cheer on the team that is (or should be) close to the hearts and minds of everyone with diabetes: it's the one weekend each year that I can be certain the team will be "in town", the weekend it races in title sponsor Sanofi-Aventis' Tour of Somerville series, which takes place within cycling distance of my home.
