So last night, I did the Dumbest Thing Ever. I had a couple of glasses of wine while we had family over, celebrating a birthday, and after they left, I went to bed and turned on the television. And what was on?

Steel freakin' Magnolias.

I haven't watched that movie since about a year after Olivia was diagnosed. I tried watching it then and bawled my eyes out. Well, guess what? I did it again last night. Mark was asleep beside me and I had to hold my hands over my mouth to keep from sobbing out loud. It was awful. I couldn't finish watching it.

(Continued)
Now, about this time, I ought to tell my friendly hairdresser that I really need to retest. That it'll only take a minute. That I'm a bit dizzy. But I don't. And I have this irrational and overwhelming urge to laugh as I picture myself pulling a Steel Magnolias'-style Shelby freak out in my own, hometown version of Truvy's Salon. Still, I don't say anything, as I am wrapped in a smock and my hair falls in small, trim-length strands all around. Everything is a bit turned around. The older lady from earlier is STARING at me again. I wonder what she's thinking.
I wonder if she thinks whatever I've got is catchy. I'm sure I look a fright. I try to focus on staying upright as the cut is finished and my hair is styled. When it's done, I sit in the chair too long, trying to gather my things, throwing away the spent juice bag and mentos wrapper. I test gain, 5-4-3-2-1... "41 mg/dl." Oof. Not so hot. (READ MORE)

I am sitting in the waiting room at the hairdresser, flipping through a magazine that highlights what celebrity stylists are doing with hair that is blonder, smoother, tamer and thinner than my own. I'm tired -but I've worked all day - so that's normal. My appointment was a half hour ago, so I think that my feeling totally annoyed is probably justified. It's not until I see two heads of the same extension-filled yellow hair on a pair of identical faces staring at me from the same shiny magazine page that I realize - something could be amiss with my blood sugar. As a type 2 diabetic woman, I was shocked to discover how little information is available about pregnancy and diabetes. At first glance, it looks as if there's a ton on the topic. Google "pregnancy and diabetes" and several million pages come up. But dig a little closer and you'll see the majority of those pages are about diabetes of pregnancy, or gestational diabetes. I'm often told what a wonderful mother I would make.
I'm often asked if Bob and I plan to have kids of our own.
My answer is usually something along the lines of "Who knows? Maybe someday we'll decide to adopt or foster children, but it's not likely I'll be giving birth anytime in the future."
This is around the time in the conversation that I get "the look." Sometimes, the person will express out loud what "the look" says so clearly. "It's the diabetes, isn't it?" (READ MORE)

For the past few days, I've been battling a terrible thing (I'm being quite sarcastic here, with a little hint of truth). This thing comes around every once in awhile, but usually it comes with explanation (hello, Mother Nature!). However, this thing of late is out of the ordinary. This thing is hunger.

For the past week or so, I've been ravenously hungry all the time. Occasionally I get this way when it's that time of the month so I eat a little extra and go on my way. But this time, I'm perplexed. And annoyed.

Is it the extra exercise? Have I been skipping lunch? Am I not consuming enough calories in general? I'm quite annoyed because food is such an integral part of everything.

Food is expensive. Food is time-consuming. Food spikes blood sugars. Food can lower blood sugars (by this, I mean crazy crashes after boluses). Food is life. But now, food is just plain annoying.

Charlie Bucket, that is. From Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

(Wonka plays the musical combination, opening the door to the Chocolate Room. The group rushes in excitedly.)

GRANDPA JOE: (On phone to Mrs. Bucket) OK, so we’re here. He was 57 when we were waiting outside so I gave him two Squelchy Snorters. He wants to have a handful of whipped cream from a giant mushroom, about a dozen jelly beans from a jelly bean tree and he wants to drink chocolate from a chocolate river. How many carbs do you think?

I went to the movies with a girl friend last night. We've only met one other time and I didn't feel that instant "best friend" vibe but Marvin was busy and I was dressed cute. So I decided to venture outside my shy self. We ended up seeing Next Three Days at Studio Movie Grill. Dinner and a movie all in one. Expensive, but good.

Next Three Days hasn't really been advertised here but the few times I'd seen it come up I thought it looked good. It seemed like my type of movie. I had no idea if it'd be hers, but her pick was sold out. We ordered dinner. I had a glass of wine. The movie started.

**Notice: some spoilers here...a big part of the movie will be given away if you continue to read. Just for those of you planning to see it (which I do recommend!)!**
