It's sad when a basic necessity becomes a luxury. But as a new mom, I'm learning fast that things I once took for granted, like a daily shower or a quick trip to Starbucks for the new Sugar-free Gingerbread Latte (yum! have you tried it?), are all too hard to come by these days.
The worst of it is sleep. During pregnancy, I was warned by parents everywhere to enjoy my sleep while I still could. And I knew having a baby in the house would make it difficult to catch a few Zzzs. But I honestly was not prepared for just how bad it would really be.
I'm lucky if I get four hours in a 24-hour period.
It takes a real toll on my mood (just ask my husband) and my energy level. Now research shows this chronic sleep deprivation is bad for my health and weight. (READ MORE)

Saturday was one of those random days for my diabetes. I have been thinking about it and I have come up with a few ideas about why my sugars were off. For one thing, it's the weekend and I ALWAYS seem to have difficulty keeping things on track. I am sure that all of you out there can relate to this. Saturday and Sunday come around and sleeping patterns go out the window! All throughout the work week, I get up about the same time each morning; eat the same size breakfast and then go through my typical work day. Well, then the weekend gets here, and I am eating at completely different times and having irregular meals. And when it comes to physical activity on the weekend, I am either extremely lazy or working exceedingly hard. (READ MORE)

Cathy in Iowa recently asked: Have you ever experienced sleeping problems with your daughter? My step son was over this weekend and came into our bedroom 6 times due to the fact he can't sleep. He has this issues a lot of times when he is at our house. Is this anything that can be related to his medicine? Thanks a ton!!

I haven't had sleep issues with Olivia in a long time. She used to wake up often when she was 4, 5, 6 years old, but I think it was due to nerves more than anything. She would wake up when she was low and that would sometimes translate into several wakings during the night, to have me check that she was ok. Sometimes she just needed that reassurance.

Thursday night, I decided to stay up a little too late (or early, we shall say). My mother always warned me when I was younger to monitor my blood sugars closely when I threw my sleep cycle off. I never figured out why, because I always seemed to be fine. What does me being a night owl have to do with blood sugars?

 

But Thursday night was an extreme. I didn't get to bed until just before the sun was rising. I made sure to sleep in as long as possible (and managed 6 hours of sleep) just to make it through the day ahead of me.

I've been mysteriously absent from the blogging world again. My apologies! I've been busy with baby and holidays, and keeping myself healthy despite the viral-cold-winds that are a-blowing. With a school teacher husband, it's hard to keep germs out of the house!
I thought I'd touch base with a quick recap of the last few weeks.
I took the month of December off of blood sugar management to focus on weight loss. I rejoined Weight Watchers (I'm a lapsed lifer) and found a meeting that's more like family with a great leader, Kim. Despite the holidays, I managed to stick to the program. (READ MORE)

My pump sites have just not been cooperating lately.  No matter where I put the canula - it ends up hurting.  A lot.  Enough so that I complain about it. 

 

To give you an idea of what it takes for me to complain - I am a girl who has had external fixators drilled into a bone in my arm for eight weeks and who refused pain killers (other than Tylenol) after two days.  I'm not a sissy.  Not at all.  So these sites are causing me more than a little bit of turmoil.

Seven weeks into this whole motherhood thing and I can honestly say I understand the true meaning of sleep deprivation. It's a brand of exhaustion I have never experienced before. Finals week in college does not begin to touch the level of tired I am. Moonlighting as a rock star while (barely) holding a 9 to 5 gig as an editor comes close, but still no cigar.
There is a reason sleep deprivation is used as torture, although I can't imagine how well it works if you're trying to get someone to talk. I'm so tired I barely know my own name right now. If I possessed any classified information crucial to the nation's security, that secret would be safe with me, because I really can't remember much of anything.
Things that were previously second nature now require a great deal of effort. And that primarily applies to my diabetes control. (READ MORE)

I had one, maybe two, good weeks on Atkins. Then funky things started happening with my blood sugar again. Despite not eating many carbs (and keeping those precious few carbs I ate to things like spinach, broccoli and baby romaine), my premeal readings started creeping up again.
Somedays, I'd wake up high--higher than when I went to bed the night before. One night, I went to sleep at 133 (which isn't too shabby for me these days) and woke up at 190. I didn't eat anything in my sleep either. That just isn't fair. If I'm going to be 190, I should at least get the joy of having done something to "deserve" it. (READ MORE)

I knew that I hadn't checked my blood sugar in hours. Last time I did, I was 100 so I just didn't worry. I enjoyed a small dinner, judging my carbs to perfection. I carried on with my night.

 

Right before I fell asleep, I thought I should check my blood sugar just to be safe. I was feeling a little funny, minor thirst, minor nausea. I checked at 502. I haven't been above 500 in over a year.

 

I bolused like normal, wondering if my infusion set was the problem. I had changed it earlier, but I blew it off since I was 100 after lunch (and hours after the set change). I set an alarm to wake me up in two hours to make sure I was heading down.

After the picnic last night, I was extremely tired. It'd been an incredibly long week, we'd just played all kinds of games, and to top it off my blood sugar was low. So I ate some fruit and mixed nuts hoping I wouldn't have to eat anything heavier right before crashing into my bed. But my blood sugar wouldn't come up, it seemed to only be dropping. I drank juice and ate crackers, intently watching the CGMS to tell me when it was rising.
