Thursday night, I decided to stay up a little too late (or early, we shall say). My mother always warned me when I was younger to monitor my blood sugars closely when I threw my sleep cycle off. I never figured out why, because I always seemed to be fine. What does me being a night owl have to do with blood sugars?
But Thursday night was an extreme. I didn't get to bed until just before the sun was rising. I made sure to sleep in as long as possible (and managed 6 hours of sleep) just to make it through the day ahead of me.

His hands move over my waist to my hips. He brushes by my insulin pump, which feels to me about fifty times its actual size. I wonder, does he notice it there beneath my clothes, beneath his hand?
My bloodsugar is 355 mg/dl. I feel yucky. I know I'm spilling ketones. When he kisses me, do I taste like fruit, like wine, like the acetone that's eating away at me? Does he see the awful dry feeling behind my eyes; is he thinking I look as horrible as I feel?
He takes my hand, lacing his fingers through mine. I trace his palm with my fingertips. Why do these calluses feel so obvious, so hard and unfeminine?
We are heated and intense. I am lost in this embrace. My head is floating somewhere in a passionate, dizzy ether. Or am I low? And if I am, how can I stop and ask for time at this particular moment?

In the last several weeks at work I've gotten two "Is that your phone?" comments about Dex, one "Is that your pager?" comment about Toohey and one "I think we just violated HIPPA" comment. Oh, and two very long, in-depth conversations about diabetes, pumps and continuous glucose monitors. It's interesting how much of this information had become visceral to me... I found myself explaining things I hadn't thought I would need to but realized that basic diabetes knowledge is not so common.
Actually, I take that back. Some people know enough about diabetes to be dangerous, but what they have no clue about is pumps and CGM. Which is fine. In fact, today I told a co-worker after a lengthy conversation about how the pump and the CGM work that I don’t mind talking about it. I clarified by saying as long as I wasn’t being judged and people who were asking questions were willing to accept that I am the expert.

Susanne went to Children's Hospital to talk to a family therapist about Charlie. He's been crying a lot in school.
We do everything we can to make him feel like a normal boy, but let's be honest – living with diabetes is not normal. There are times when he must eat Jell-O in school rather than the cookies or pretzels he thought he was going to have.
So he cries. He rubs his eyes with his fists, runs into the hallway or bathroom and cries. Charlie's teacher has expressed that he's becoming more and more upset when high blood sugars prevent him from eating what he wants to eat. I'm sure the high blood sugar in itself contributes to his inability to control his emotions.
Susanne thought the meeting with the therapist went well.
