Over fifteen percent of San Diego County's population of 2.9 million has been evacuated from their homes due to impending threats of fast burning fires. The San Diego Charger's home field, Qualcomm Stadium, as well as local shelters and hotels are being filled up as a safe-haven for relocated San Diegans. More than 1,300 homes and businesses have been set afire by the wind propelled wildfires and containment in some areas is still zero percent. (READ MORE)

On Thursday night, I found myself in an emergency room exam room at 2 am, waiting anxiously and staring up at a picture of a baby cocker spaniel posing cutely in a watering can.
No, don't worry. Charlie is fine. I'm fine too. Whole family is fine. This was an emergency room for pets. But wait, I don't even own a pet. I'm not even a pet person. I had to get up for work in a few hours. What was I doing?

2007 is behind us now. It blurred by and stamped in key moments that will surely be remembered. My past year with diabetes stacks upon only a few others since I was diagnosed. 2008 will mark four years since that day in the hospital and it seems like I'm always learning something new. Each highlighted moment in this year taught me a little more about how I successfully live with diabetes. (READ MORE)

People have favourite locations to put their pump sites. Olivia is partial to her belly. I know dLife's very own newlywed, Kerri, loves to put sites in her thighs.
Over the weekend, while we were at the beach, Olivia decided to try a thigh site, even though she hasn't had much luck with them in the past. Most of the time, she rips them out because she forgets they're there when she takes off her jeans. But it's summer, she's in shorts and she thought she'd give it another try.
Sunday morning, we put a site in. Sunday was OK. She had a couple of highs, but they were in the low 200s and, of course, she'd forgotten to put her blood sugar in her pump once or twice, which is her ongoing issue.

As if diabetes wasn’t in the back of my mind enough as it is, the music industry seems to be playing a little joke on me to keep it on my mind even more often. We all know the tools that keep us healthy are filled with wires, and electronics, and batteries, and that has been a stellar improvement on diabetes care over the decades. But with all this technological advancement comes the need for increased safety measures, including alarms that beep to proclaim an insulin pump error, a successful blood test, or a completed phase of setup. The joke becomes less funny when I am driving down the highway with some music going, focused on the road, when an identical tone comes from the stereo that sounds like my insulin pump.

So, the OmniPods I use are listed to have an IPX8 water tight rating which means the pods will work flawlessly in eight feet of water for up to thirty minutes. This is a great feature to have during shower times, sunny-day pool ventures, and splashing around carefree in the ocean. It is one of the reasons I chose to use it, because it limits the time I need to be disconnected from an insulin source. But, since I started surfing last year, three pods have met their fate in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. I was able to keep one from polluting the ocean floor, but the other two are on their way to a rusty end. Sad.

I'm mad. I'm so mad I'm numb.
You know when you've been waiting and waiting for something (i.e., a package to arrive) that you stop looking for it because you know it won't be there?
Well, when my DexCom starter kit didn't show up on Saturday (which I kind of knew would happen because I'm sure Saturday deliveries cost extra) I was positive I could expect it today since I was explicitly told I'd have it no later than Monday.
But, since I had been waiting two weeks for it, I had almost forgotten about it. Almost. I had actually been thinking about it most of the day, thinking about forgoeing the house work I have tonight to read the user's manual and watch the clock during the minimum three-hour charge time for the receiver.
