One of The Other Half's family holiday traditions has been to redecorate their entire houses in Early, Middle, and Modern Christmas. Everything from the knicknacks on the end tables to the rug and hand towels in the guest bathroom is redone in red, green, snowmen, and old-fashioned Santa Clauses. The centerpiece of it all is the Christmas Village.
While some folk pride themselves on collecting all the pieces in a particular name-brand collection, most of these villages are odd collections of pieces purchased from sale racks here and there, or made by friends and family.

When testing Charlie’s blood sugar in public, there was a time when I would crouch down in a semi-secluded corner of the store and prick his finger to avoid full-on display of bloodshed. Not so much anymore. While using some gift cards at Best Buy the other day, Charlie said he felt low. The diabetes bag folds open quite nicely on the DVD shelving while curious shoppers look on. I had it wedged between Night at the Museum and Star Trek, I believe.
Maybe I should collaborate on the Zagat guide to the top public places to test your child’s blood sugar in.

In a memorable sequence from J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, new Ensign James Tiberius Kirk exhibits an allergic reaction to a drug, his hands and tongue immediately swelling to seemingly-ridiculous proportions in minutes. While the sequence is played comedically, the reality of the situation is anything but.
Local insects congregated in the early evening rains before Hurricane Irene passed through our local area, taking refuge in window frames, sneaking through decades-old screens, and so on. Since our air-conditioning is limited to the bedroom, I am loathe to close windows unless and until necessary -- when the temperature drops, or when the incoming rain becomes strong enough to threaten whatever I have sitting near them. This has the side effect of making me a "target of opportunity" on those occasions in which those windows must be closed. Unfortunately, I'm allergic to insect bites.

"Hey mister!"
"Hey mister!"
On the bus ride to the natural science museum, a kid with a crew-cut and three visible teeth tapped my shoulder. He looked and sounded like he could have wandered off of the set of The Little Rascals. He may as well have been in black and white and wearing dirty overalls.
"Hey mister! Who are you?"
"I’m Charlie’s dad."
"Oh, I know him," the boy said, rubbing his eye with his thumb.
"He’s the one who has …"
It was on the tip of his tongue.
"The one who has …"
I wasn’t about to help him.
The one who has …

Okay, I will warn you up front that this post is a total rant and has no other substance besides the fact that I need to let off some steam. I am also looking for some of you who have dealt with this annoying stereotype.
As I was minding my own business here at my desk the janitor comes up to me and asks me if I have to take shots everyday. I realize that he was listening to a conversation I was having with a co-worker about insulin and so on. A total eavesdropping moment right? So I answer, "nope." And totally leave it at that.
He says, "Oh you got off of insulin. That's good. Just a diet now or pills?"
"No I have an insulin pump."
"There is a gal in another office I clean that has to shoot up every day." Then he does it. He does this sort of motion with his right hand towards his left upturned arm. As if he is shooting up heroin or something right into his vein! (READ MORE)
