Tomorrow is the JDRF Promise Ball. I still haven’t figured out what I’m going to wear. Since it’s black tie, I wanted to wear one of the many evening gowns I have laying around (from prom and other balls). So last week, I tried on the main one I wanted, but I didn’t feel comfortable.

It's been a bit busy this week, leaving me somewhat late on reporting back on Saturday's d-group meeting to see Breakthrough: The Dramatic Story of the Discovery of Insulin, a special exhibit showing at the New York Historical Society. Since I had to work Sunday, this ended up as the total of my World Diabetes Day celebrations this year.

Since yesterday, I’ve been working on fundraising and getting tickets for the JDRF Promise Ball coming up in the next few weeks. So far I have raised $2000 (or 4 tickets). I’m so excited! Not only have I raised money for a charity that means the world to me, but I’m getting dressed up and meeting dozens of new people that have been through everything I’ve been through.

The evening was perfect. My friends and I looked like we just stepped out of a magazine. I finally got a dress to work (thanks to an ingenious idea that I'll cover in a future post!). We even valeted the car. Everything was fabulous.
After chatting and perusing the silent auction items, we headed into the Ballroom of the Americas for dinner and the main events. I was excited to be there, excited to be part of such a personal and amazing fundraising event. I didn't realize how excited I would be as the night progressed. I didn't realize how carried away I would be by the actual facts.
Dinner was magnificent. The food was scrumptious. The presentation was perfect. Dessert was the best part. Chocolate napoleon with chocolate covered strawberries. Two of my favorite things. I even judged the carbs and activity perfectly (I ended the evening at 130).

There comes a point where death isn't scary anymore. But hope...hope is scary.
I'm a fan of Grey's Anatomy on ABC. The latest episode featured a terminal cancer patient...a young and seemingly vibrant woman (minus the disease ravaging her body)...who was seeking physician assisted suicide. Those lines up there were ones she said in defense of her own death.
As they passed through the TV speakers, they hit me. Hard. I know they're just fiction, that some TV writer/producer thought them up. Someone thought they knew what it felt like to face that precipice. Maybe they actually do. Maybe they're writing from experience the way that I am now.
Those words hit me hard because it's a way that I've never verbalized about emotions that I constantly feel. I've never really considered death and hope in that way. The fear. In a reverse kind of way.

It's that time of year again...fundraising! So I've written my letter. And here it is, for the world to see!
Dear______,
On March 3rd, 1993, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I was 4 years old. It’s been over sixteen years since that day. I’ve struggled, grown, and I’ve gained and lost precious moments from this disease.
In October of 2007, my dad was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as well. To this day, hearing that he had this dreadful disease like me has been one of the worst days of my life. Now, it isn’t just about my own diabetes, my risk of complications, or my lows and highs with this disease. It’s about my dad’s A1c, the genetic risks of diabetes, and the worry that comes with having a diabetic loved one.

I mentioned in a prior blog how I dreaded trips to the snack stand during baseball season. When I volunteered to work the snack stand, I was amazed by the level of sugar that was served and the volume at which it was consumed.
I get the fact that baseball snack stands are supposed to serve crap. I'm not expecting to find packets of organic freeze-dried green beans and peas amongst Starburst and Skittles. However, can't we at least serve crap that is slightly less crappy?

The JDRF Promise Ball is coming up in just a matter of two weeks! I can't believe it's already here. I don't feel prepared at all. Sure, I've been fundraising for months and getting all that in order. But the rest of me isn't prepared to take a night to remember diabetes for the past year of my life.
Last year's Promise Ball was absolutely amazing. I took three of my friends with me; we got to dress up, valet park my car and eat a fancy dinner. As amazing as it was, it still brings me to tears today (almost one year later). Because the most amazing part was seeing how much was raised in one single night to find a cure for diabetes.
