I've seen a lot of blog posts lately about restarting a fitness program, or starting again to tighten up blood sugar control, or losing weight.  I have posted on these subjects myself.  Many. Many. Times.

 

I got to thinking the other night about what causes my failures.   And how I could do it differently, with better results.  The past few years I have met Einstein's definition of insanity - doing the same things over and over and expecting different results.

 

 

I go into this with the idea that it's for LIFE.  Never again will I binge on malted milk balls.  I will work out EVERY DAY the rest of my life.  I will check my sugar 4 times a day minimum.  You get the idea.  It gets overwhelming very quickly.

My job will be ending sometime this summer. Consequently, I am investigating our health insurance options. Since hubby is self-employed, we have always covered the family under my work policy.

 

Now, I know that "health care in this country is in crisis"!  I know this is a huge touchpoint for political candidates.  Yes, I know all this intellectually. 

 

Now it's PERSONAL.  COBRA, offered by my employer by federal mandate, is more than a house note EVERY month.  Private insurance is still pricey - more than what we paid on 2 car notes.  And it carries a $2000 deductible per person.  Some sloppy math later and it could be $15,000 a year before they pay any expenses for us.

Yesterday I talked about how weightlifting was my key to success. It helped improve my life with diabetes on so many levels. I also talked about how my training these days has evolved and become more specific to my ever changing needs.

I want this blog to be about you and your training. I want to use my Blogabetes entry today as a platform for all of you to give a brief description about the types of things that you are doing for your exercise. I understand that not everyone is going to have the same type of answer. I realize that some of you may hardly be doing anything. THAT IS OK! Some of you may be training for a marathon. Some of you may walk around your neighborhood each day. The point that I want to make here is that this IS A GREAT place for all of us to share with one another the types of things that we are doing and how they are affecting each of our lives.

An old adage suggests there is strength in numbers.

 

 

Not the numbers of our ABCs -- although there is strength in that knowledge -- but the strength of many people, standing together, for the same cause.

 

Many people making the same choice made Jesse Ventura -- a third-party candidate -- governor of Minnesota, and Abraham Lincoln -- also a third-party candidate -- President of the United States.

 

Many people speaking out on television and in the media made everyone aware of AIDS and of Breast Cancer -- even though those two diseases kill and disable far fewer people than heart disease and diabetes.

 

Why is it, then, that hundreds (thousands?) of Twitter users turned their avatars red for World AIDS day, or green to support the protesters after the Iranian election, but not blue to support World Diabetes Day?

The recession has finally caught up to my employer, who has painstakingly tried to shield us from it as much as possible. However, next month may bring a restructuring that may include layoffs. No one knows yet who may or may not be on the chopping block.
 

I’ve been unemployed before and it sucks. And I don’t want to do it again. But then, I didn’t have diabetes. Then, I didn’t rely on an insulin pump to stay healthy. Now, I think being unemployed would be a much worse situation.
 

When I heard the news about what may happen next month my first thoughts were about how we would continue to pay the two mortgages (no, the house in Missouri hasn’t sold yet!), buy groceries and continue to provide the basics for our family without losing our minds. The thoughts of how I would continue to pay for my health care needs were delayed, strangely.

It is often difficult to ask for help. Many of us see it as a sign of weakness, or as giving up our independence. In the case of those of us with diabetes, it may mean coming out of the insulin closet for the first time, exposing ourselves for possible loss of job opportunities, medical insurance, or even medical care. One might say that for some of us, getting the medications we need to live right now puts our future income, and our future health, at risk. On the other hand, sometimes that exposure can point the way for others with similar difficulties to find life-saving solutions. In that sense, those of us who go public with our pancreatically-challenged state are sometimes privileged to be the lightbearers for others' lives.

Apparently, what I have is uncommon. Perhaps even rare. A workplace of trust where employees are encouraged to work from home, a workplace that has won awards for its flexibility programs, a workplace where employees have stayed for 20 years with no sign of retirement. This is a good place to work. A really, really good place. And believe me, I know how good I have it.

 

Especially since I see how un-good it can be at other employers. And I’ve worked at those employers. The places where you dread going in to work because you don’t know if the boss will be Jekyl or Hyde that day. The place where you love what you do and enjoy working with your co-workers – even if it’s not all of them – but that one important person who can make life hell makes you want to leave.

Today, the first Friday of February, is national "Wear Red" day in honor (or observance) of Women's Heart Health Awareness, as spearheaded by the "Go Red for Women" campaign. So of course I will be wearing red to work and I've been handing out Red Dress pins.

I got an email today about a new program that Columbia University (in New York City) is offering. A completely online master's degree in Diabetes Education and Management. This type of degree can aide current CDE's, prospective CDE's who are looking for certification, or anyone in the diabetes arena that wants a better understanding of how to educate diabetics and further proper management.

 

At first, my interest was piqued. Would I want to do that? I once looked into nursing programs in order to pursue certification as a Certified Diabetes Educator, but decided that nursing school wasn't for me. An online Master of Science though? Maybe.
