Yesterday I talked about how weightlifting was my key to success. It helped improve my life with diabetes on so many levels. I also talked about how my training these days has evolved and become more specific to my ever changing needs.

I want this blog to be about you and your training. I want to use my Blogabetes entry today as a platform for all of you to give a brief description about the types of things that you are doing for your exercise. I understand that not everyone is going to have the same type of answer. I realize that some of you may hardly be doing anything. THAT IS OK! Some of you may be training for a marathon. Some of you may walk around your neighborhood each day. The point that I want to make here is that this IS A GREAT place for all of us to share with one another the types of things that we are doing and how they are affecting each of our lives.

My job will be ending sometime this summer. Consequently, I am investigating our health insurance options. Since hubby is self-employed, we have always covered the family under my work policy.

 

Now, I know that "health care in this country is in crisis"!  I know this is a huge touchpoint for political candidates.  Yes, I know all this intellectually. 

 

Now it's PERSONAL.  COBRA, offered by my employer by federal mandate, is more than a house note EVERY month.  Private insurance is still pricey - more than what we paid on 2 car notes.  And it carries a $2000 deductible per person.  Some sloppy math later and it could be $15,000 a year before they pay any expenses for us.

It's interesting that thankfulness is in the news this month. I've seen mention of several studies and a couple books on the topic. Some religions, 12-step programs and therapies have long advocated gratitude as a means of feeling happier.
Today is the day we as a nation think more openly about the blessings in our life.
This year, the Dotys have Kate's arrival to count high on our list. She has already completed our family in ways I wouldn't have thought of a year ago. (READ MORE)

I've seen a lot of blog posts lately about restarting a fitness program, or starting again to tighten up blood sugar control, or losing weight.  I have posted on these subjects myself.  Many. Many. Times.

 

I got to thinking the other night about what causes my failures.   And how I could do it differently, with better results.  The past few years I have met Einstein's definition of insanity - doing the same things over and over and expecting different results.

 

 

I go into this with the idea that it's for LIFE.  Never again will I binge on malted milk balls.  I will work out EVERY DAY the rest of my life.  I will check my sugar 4 times a day minimum.  You get the idea.  It gets overwhelming very quickly.

I woke up this morning with a 136 on the Freestyle. One of these days I will actual be within range when I wake up. Anyhow, I was not very upset about that.

 

After realizing I had overslept I ran into the shower and hurried like mad. This has been the scenario for the entire week. I wake up late and run like mad to get to work close to starting time.

 

This morning, I was 20 minutes late. As soon as I walk in the door my supervisor says, “The phones are not working, I don’t know what to do!”

 

I have become the “Tech Guy” in the office and anything that blinks, beeps, or has a plug seems to fall into my domain. I guess I am that much of a dork that they automatically assume I know all things electronical but that my friends is not the case.

The politically anticipated Iowa caucuses offer a strong foreshadow on who will take lead towards being the next United States president. The two current party front-runners in this race were decided tonight, giving Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mike Huckabee a head start. "Do you see symptoms of low blood glucose? Shakiness, sweating or disorientation?"


"Well, sure, of course. My son has type 1 diabetes. I'm sorry, who are you again?"


"This is a free service from your insurance provider. We'll be calling occasionally to check in with you to see how things are going."


"Oh."


"How often do you see low blood sugars?"


"I'd say we see at least one low almost every day."


"Whoa! Every day???"


"Well it's a long day."


"Do you see elevated blood glucose levels?"


"Well, yeah. I did mention my son has diabetes, right?"


"Yes. How often do you see high blood glucose?"

Both of my doctors, my endocrinologist and the doctor in charge of my bio-identical treatment, have sent disability status letters for me. It actually took very little effort, despite the initial feedback from the nurses in the beginning. I'm happy to get these out of the way and go forward with the process. I'll also be writing my own letter to support my case with a personal note.

I was recently asked to suggest some information for a diabetic in another country. I can’t say that I have ever done much research on the topic of diabetes in a foreign place. I’ve thought about health care and how difficult it must be for those that don’t have immediate access for the disease. Yet, I’ve never taken the time to truly research information and find the reality in the situation.

I've been doing some reading on diabulimia. It's not a recognized eating disorder, but it certainly sounds like it should be.

Diabulimia is a means of weight loss, primarily suffered by young women. In order to lose weight, they use far less, sometimes even no insulin and let their blood sugars run very high. It means they can eat whatever they want without it having any repercussions on their weight. I remember how skinny Olivia was when she was diagnosed, just before her 3rd birthday. She only weighed 24 lbs. Her body was eating itself.
