There are a lot of things in this world that I don't understand and don't choose to understand. Politics is one of them. I despise politics. I don't do office politics, I don't play games with people, I feel like I'm a straight-shoting tell-it-like-it-is kind of person. So, I really don't like politics. Which means I don't pay attention to bills and votes and all that nonsense. I should, I've tried, but I don't.

 

I do know enough to know that the passage of the health-care reform bill today and the fact that it's being sent to President Obama's desk to be signed in to law (which it will) is a big deal.

Having been away for a weekend of fun since Friday morning, I feel like I've been living under a rock! Albeit a really fun rock, with a little alcohol, BBQ, and great music, but still a rock.

 

So, as I watched Barack Obama introduce his first Supreme Court appointment, Sonia Sotomayor, this morning, I was taken aback to discover that she has type 1 diabetes. That she was diagnosed at eight years old. That she's lived with type 1 for 46 years.

 

How incredibly inspiring for people with diabetes. Even more inspiring, I would imagine, for those raising children with type 1.

Last week when I suggested that the diabetes community design an awareness symbol akin to the breast cancer campaign's pink ribbon, I apparently hit a nerve with someone.

Nordtorp says he's not into the secret handshake thing and that ribbons and pins don’t make a difference. He doesn't think that wearing a trinket will cause more money to be funnelled into diabetes research.

I have to say that I whole-heartedly disagree. If someone asked you what are the major illnesses -- chronic or otherwise -- that affect the U.S. population, would the common person identify diabetes as one of them? Without a connection to diabetes, I doubt it. Does the common person even really understand what diabetes is? Not many.

I was walking into the store as they were walking out (couldn't wait to feel the rush of cold air after walking from my car to the front of the grocery store; 9 p.m. and still 100 degrees outside. Autumn, please?).

 

I noticed him first: shorter than I am (a lot of people are... I'm 5'10"), muscular, tan skin, seemed confident in himself, attractive, but mostly I noticed the muscular.

 

She seemed just as confident. I noticed how thin she was and attractive and how short her shorts were.

 

As we passed I looked forward, but somehow noticed something that made me turn back. Something white. And round. And ... was that... tubing? Yes! An infusion set on the outside of her thigh! I saw it! It was like finding Waldo. Such exhilaration!

I don't think I've ever told you about our Pest Guy. To say he's creepy is an understatement, but nearly every time I see him I wind up with a story to tell.

 

If you want to keep the scorpions out of your house here, then you need to spray for crickets (because they're the main menu for scorpions, apparently) pretty frequently. So Pest Guy comes every other month. And in his defense, he knows what he's doing because when other pest guys from his office come we wind up with crickets.

 

Anyway. So Pest Guy usually comes on the weekends, but I screwed something up once and he wound up coming one day when I was working from home. So as he's doing his bug thing around the house I'm sitting at my desk doing editor/writer stuff and he asks what it is that I do.

 

"I'm an editor," I tell him.

I despise politics -- political or office or otherwise. First I don't really understand much of it and second I just don't see why people have to act like high school all the time.

 

It's only been recently that I paid much attention to the presidential election. I remember voting in my first presidential election; I was a senior in college and voting by absentee ballot. I felt it was my civic duty to vote, but I couldn't figure out what the real issues were because there was so much mud slinging. The guy I voted for won, but I remember thinking "He hasn't done such a bad job the last four years, so he's probably the lesser of the two evils." Yes, that's seriously what I based my vote on.

I've been somewhat ambivalent about today's rally surrounding the United Nations Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases. The libertarian "party line" is that the United Nations does little more than abrogate nation-states' sovereignty and forcibly redistribute income from the wealthier nations to the less-wealthy, dampening incentives for innovation and destroying private charity efforts which would otherwise improve the lives of those in need. On the other hand, the prospect of spending time with friends I seldom see in-person is an opportunity not to be missed.

 

It's a dilemma I'd been wrestling with for a couple of months, and friendship was winning over politics. However, neither friendship nor politics had the choice to decide.

 

The deciding factor was money.

Sometimes, what I know, and what I believe, isn't politic to proselytize.

 

I don't mean religion in it's Deity-centric sense, or partisan politics the way it is played out in our system of Federal, state, and local governments. I'm talking about diabetes politics.

 

I tend to turn the "more insulin, more strips" outcry on its ears, because when I look at the issue I don't see it as a public health issue or an access-to-healthcare issue, but as issues of crime, infrastructure, and -- at it's most basic level -- poverty. While I understand the "Type 1 versus Type 2" issues of proportion, confusion, alarmist publicity, and palliation-versus-remediation, I'd much rather us present a united front to those we approach for funds to prescreen, arrest, remediate, and (eventually) cure all types of diabetes than get caught up in internicine squabbles that would turn our benefactors away.

In the rainbows-and-unicorns world of diabetes activism, it is often said that one of the most egregious oversights in international politics is the lack of available medical insulin in economically-depressed areas and emerging nations. Our standard-bearers act as if all we need to do is ship tons of strips, gallons of insulin, and forests-worth of needles to the middle of the African bush and every person with diabetes will live forever in the world of Blood Sugar Nirvana and No Complications.

 

The truth of the matter is much more complex.
