The results from my first week on the Core Plan at Weight Watchers proved positive. I lost a little. I thought I would lose more. I expected I would. But I still lost so that is good.
I posted about the differences between the Flex and Core plan on my personal blog today.
One of the big differences about the Flex plan (one with the Points) and the Core plan is that you eat until you are satisfied. This, my dear readers, may be the reason for not losing at least a flipping pound this week.
Satisfied? How do I figure that out? I always ate until I was full or finished my plate and that was it. That is the way I was raised. “Are you full?” That was always the question when I would announce being “done” with dinner.
But being satisfied is a totally different thing. (READ MORE)

Which would you like to hear first? I guess I'll start with the bad news and get my whining out of the way first. The scale is up this week. Granted it's only half a pound, but the frustrating part is I have been working so hard at this. I've been following Weight Watchers faithfully since Thanksgiving and I've only lost about 2 and a half pounds. What's worse is I'm starting to begrudge people at the meeting who lose more than that each week. Selfish, isn't it?
In reviewing my diet, exercise and lifestyle, I'm even more annoyed because I'm eating less food (and healthier food, at that), exercising more, drinking water and even getting more sleep than I had been. But I'm still not losing. What do I need to do? I'm open to all suggestions, except "be patient." I don't do well with patience. (READ MORE)

There is a lot going on today. A lot. I guess I'm not very happy, but I am trying my darndest to be. I am dealing with more emotions today than I can ever remember having. I have a lot of personal stuff happening and I have been trying to share as much of that with you all as I can. As you know, I am in the middle of a life changing experience with my career. Just last night I sent my resume, cover letter, and references off to what I hope to be my next, and potentially last employer. Also, so much is going on in the world with people suffering, hurting, and being sick. And last but not least, I wasn't able to train martial arts today, and instead I ate a freaking pizza.

Lately my control has been great. A month ago, I can honestly say that it wasn't. When I blogged about my last endocronologist appointment, my diabetes was in the driver's seat. I was getting a two thumbs down rating from the critics. Well, if you have been staying up with my entries, you know that as of lately my schedule has changed drastically. My new daily routine is making a HUGE DIFFERENCE with my sugars (This is the part where I attempt to sound smart and provide you with some advice that you are probably already know.) I just want to say to you, if you are a diabetic, or know someone who is, and if you currently have an irregular daily schedule(like me when I was personal training with random hours), then I can tell you that you will GREATLY benefit from getting on a day-to-day routine. Everyone needs to take a personal day every now and then. At least that's how I feel. Lately, It seems like I have been running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I have been putting in some long days of landscaping work, I just returned from a weekend trip to Omaha, and my girlfriend is in the process of getting a job back in her home state. And needless to say, all of the chaos and daily schedule changes have my blood sugars going a little crazy. (READ MORE)

Fitness for any single person, diabetic or not, has to be specific and individually appropriate. I am an ACE certified personal trainer. ACE stands for the American Council on Exercise. I have been in the gym business for many years. I have trained hundreds of people and helped or offered advice to thousands. I have worked in five different gyms over the course of my career and I have trained myself ever since I was about fourteen, basically ever since my body decided that it was time to become diabetic. I have been learning from my own experiences, as well as gathering knowledge from every source imaginable.

When I look back at 2007, I realize that a lot happened and that I learned a great deal about many things. First and foremost, I am happy to say that it is another year completed and another successful year behind me in the books. To say that and to think about that feels great. Every day that goes by a person living with diabetes learns something new about their disease. I can look back and recall different situations where my blood sugar got low. I remember certain times when I checked my glucose and it was off the charts high. Everything that has happened this year will be a learning experience that I can come back to in the future. I learned about myself and how different things affect me. I can recall specific weeks where everything was hunky dory and others where I felt I was going to lose it. Just living and learning each day adds more notches to my diabetic belt, a belt that I will always have. (READ MORE)

ADM LogoAs an engineer by training, I find quantitative analysis -- numbers -- an expression of control. Self control, exercise, body function, health and illness... So while I'm fortunate enough not to have to be "Bionic Betty" with a peripheral pancreas, I still refer regularly to six separate instruments, plus additional Web-based resources, to manage my food intake, exercise output, and biometric information.

 

Weight. Some folk say weighing once a week is enough, but I find that if I don't weigh in every morning, my weight can go off on very health-unfriendly curves. I log my weight both in The Daily Plate and in my personal Excel workbook.

Thanks to the Amgen Tour of California contest-and-sale from Road ID, The Other Half sprung early for part of my birthday present -- the nice, sporty Wrist ID Elite. The "interactive" version features a member-controlled (that means I'm the one who puts the information in it and controls what information is in it) personal health record, which the Road ID folk call an "Emergency Response Profile" or ERP. The ERP can be read by (or read to) a first responder or a hospital admissions clerk from either the Road ID members' site or by calling a specific phone number. The name on the front and the unique serial number on the back of the ID tag provide the necessary access identification. (READ MORE)

"If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone..."

Unlike the melancholy wanderer in the Hedy West song, my cycling computer was at my right hand as I logged in yesterday's ride (to the doctor's office in one direction, then the supermarket in the opposite direction), and as I scrolled past the odometer, it read 512.4 (miles) -- which was approximately the distance I'd ridden since January first. Now, I'm nowhere fast enough to be part of someone's "lead-out train" at the end of a bicycle race -- much less fast enough to consider having others lead me out. Heck, I'm not even fast enough to consider racing the average ten-year-old (I think). But plugging away at it, bit by bit -- errand by errand -- group ride by group ride (OK, there've only been three of those so far, and during none have I been able to keep with the group) -- I've ridden over five hundred miles, this year alone.
