Three weeks now I have been waiting for OmniPods new personal diabetes manager (PDM) to arrive. It was actually a chance phone call to OmniPods customer service number that gave me word about this new product. I was nearing the last days in my previous place of residence and called to change the address on file for my automatic pod shipments. Three days, or until the insulin is all used up - that is how long an OmniPod is to be worn for. Before pumping, I was unsure if the scheduled three day replacement interval was going to be a nuisance. I even pondered the idea of trying to sneak in an extra day on the pods- so long as there was enough insulin stowed away in them. Today is Earth Day and having grown up in an environmentally responsible household, I consciously make green decisions throughout my day. Turning off lights here, not wasting water there, paper over plastic… any little thing that I know eventually adds up in a big way. I have a bad case of tech envy. The other day, I checked out the Animas website to look at the specs on the Animas 2020 because my friend just went on it. Instead of being swept away with the 2020 like I thought might happen, I am now wholly, madly, deeply in love with the new One Touch Ping that Animas has created.
I currently use the Minimed Paradigm 522. Up until a few days ago, I was quite content with it. I love the fact that my CGMS is included in the device so I don't have to wear two hefty machines. I love the ease of the Bolus Wizard. The way it calculates my average blood sugars, basal and bolus insulin, plus my carbs is absolutely amazing.

As if diabetes wasn’t in the back of my mind enough as it is, the music industry seems to be playing a little joke on me to keep it on my mind even more often. We all know the tools that keep us healthy are filled with wires, and electronics, and batteries, and that has been a stellar improvement on diabetes care over the decades. But with all this technological advancement comes the need for increased safety measures, including alarms that beep to proclaim an insulin pump error, a successful blood test, or a completed phase of setup. The joke becomes less funny when I am driving down the highway with some music going, focused on the road, when an identical tone comes from the stereo that sounds like my insulin pump.

The other day, Michelle posted about censoring her blog to not upset her mother sometimes. I realize I do this too, but not for the same reason. I tend to censor my writing out of superstition. I'm like one of those people who mouth the word cancer. When things are going good for me, I know if I blog about it, things will quickly turn around.
Last week, I chose to not look over my shoulder (or toss salt over it) and jump up and down with glee over my new pump. I was so excited about it, and how much easier it made my diabetes control.
I should know better than to speak up when things are going good. I should have whispered instead. I even knocked wood to fend off the fates, but I guess they heard me over all that banging.
