Another question from a reader. Kat Diego asks: How was the switch to middle school? My daughter is very responsible and pretty much is in charge of her care while in school. But in midddle school, she won't have one teacher, she'll have 6 or 8. How'd your daughter deal with the transition? Do you have a 504 plan? Thanks for your help!

Olivia started middle school in the fifth grade and the kids were kept pretty segregated from one another at that age (which I loved). Fifth grade was fine for her, even with switching teachers. She was well looked after and I felt comfortable with her there.

I love music.

 

Ever since I was a little kid I could sing and dance to every song on the Earth, Wind, and Fire greatest hits record. I would dance whenever Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder was played even if it was a jukebox in a crowded restaurant. And no matter the time of night, when Barney Miller’s theme song started my mother said I would come running from my room in my PJ’s to dance to the song in front of the TV.

 

I love playing it, listening to it, and even writing it sometimes. When I was a kid I played the trumpet. In Junior High learned percussion which I played throughout high school and in my 20’s I learned to play guitar. Lots of music always playing around my home and car. I love it.

Olivia handed out her information sheet to her teachers yesterday.  I just typed up something short, informing them that she has diabetes and what to do if she's running high or low. I stressed that she can treat in class and that she only needs to go to the nurse if she's under 60. 

 

I also stressed that she needs to be accompanied to said nurse.  I found out at the end of the year last year that one of Olivia's teachers wouldn't let anyone go with her.  Fortunately, Olivia's never passed out from a low, but that's not a chance I want to take.  Olivia informed me of this towards the end of the year and I talked to the teacher and the nurse about it, but according to Olivia, it didn't do any good.

I spent the better part of this week looking at apartment complexes, meeting with a potential graduate program, and learning more about the city that I'm moving to. I also went on a job interview and got lost a lot. My blood sugars stayed pretty decent throughout the stress and chaos, except for one bad high after a chocolate shake and a nasty low after Mexican food.

 

Each time I take a trip to where I'm moving, I get more and more excited. This time I really got to see where I might be living, envisioning myself driving those roads and shopping at the grocery stores. I'm still freaking out inside, wondering if this is the right decision for me. But despite the fear, I still know that I'm doing what's best for me right now and that I'm keeping my health as my priority.

Yesterday I had to go up to the school because the nurse called to say that Olivia had pulled out her site. On an overhead projector. I have no idea how she did it (and forgot to ask when she got home), but she did. Off I trotted, with a new site, the Sil-serter and a back up reservoir in hand.
When I got to the school, I had to cool my heels in the nurse's office waiting room. When I was a kid (no, it's not the up hill, both ways in the snow barefoot line, so hush), the nurse's office was a desk and a cot. It was dim and cool in there, a great place to lie down when you were feeling poorly or *ahem* hadn't studied for a test. I remember lying there, tracing a pattern in the ancient wallpaper and trying not to freak out over the crucifix hung over the head of the bed. (READ MORE)

There was fog when I walked from the parking lot to my office. I thought it was the bright sunshine. Or the warmer temperatures. Or the jacket I was wearing that was making me feel so warm.
I was disconnected, but thought it was from the conversation I had just had with The Mr.
I wanted junk food. Something smooth like chocolate, but not crunchy like cookies. I walked to the vending machine and gently fed it money until it dropped a Milky Way.
Walking up the stairs there was more fog. I thought I was tired, overwhelmed with life issues. I briefly sat at my desk, logged in to my email account. Symlin rushed me to the bathroom, where I lingered longer than usual. Fog.
Washing my hands, I looked in the mirror and it was almost as if I were watching myself on TV. Like I wasn't really there. There was a narrowness to my vision. (READ MORE)

A topic came up on one of the diabetesteentalk forums which got me thinking. The topic was about how diabetics miss days from school or work because of doctor's appointments, seizures or ketones. There were alternating perspectives. Some chose to think that if you miss for diabetes related events, you should be excused or allowed time off without feeling guilty. Others chose to think that you have to suffer through at work or school and should not miss because of diabetes. After all, it is a self managed disease. (READ MORE)

Our neighbor got into a conversation with a woman whose 4-year-old son was just diagnosed with diabetes.

 

Our heart goes out to anyone who was just diagnosed. The fear and confusion of those first few weeks is still vividly etched in my memory and probably will be forever. Whether it's a friend of a friend or a friend of a family member, on a few occasions, we've offered our phone number out to those parents in case they wanted someone to talk to; someone who's been embedded in the disease for a while.

 

Our neighbor mentioned our situation to the woman. She mentioned the difficulty we face in trying to manage Charlie's diabetes: the numerous blood sugar checks, getting up to check him in all hours of the night, the arrangement at school with his health aides, etc.

 

I'm not sure if my neighbor offered to put us in touch with her. Though if she had, I suspect the woman would decline.

A co-worker of mine recently told me about her morbidly obese future sister-in-law, who has "diabetes real bad."
"It doesn't exactly work that way," I told her, smirking like a diabetes snob. I went into the difference between type 1 and type 2 and told her that one doesn't get a bad case of diabetes. It's not like acne. So young, I thought. So naïve, I thought. So wrong. (READ MORE)
