Over the weekend, I had a
low blood sugar in the middle of the night that left me feeling like I had been beaten soundly and left in a ditch. (Covered in petrol, a la
Eddie Izzard.)
It was a strange experience, though, because the "low hangover" feeling was neatly accompanied by a feeling of guilt. This low wasn't one that came out of no where and smacked up upside the head. This low was the result of a miscalculation while I was at dinner.

Another question from a reader. Kat Diego asks: How was the switch to middle school? My daughter is very responsible and pretty much is in charge of her care while in school. But in midddle school, she won't have one teacher, she'll have 6 or 8. How'd your daughter deal with the transition? Do you have a 504 plan? Thanks for your help!
Olivia started middle school in the fifth grade and the kids were kept pretty segregated from one another at that age (which I loved). Fifth grade was fine for her, even with switching teachers. She was well looked after and I felt comfortable with her there.

So, just between me and you, where was the strangest place you've ever done it? While scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef? On the observation deck of the Empire State Building? While getting a tattoo? At a baby's christening? While milking a cow?
For me, it was on the highest point of a slowly moving Ferris wheel on a steamy night in August. Man, that was one, hot night.
As we crept higher and higher, Charlie felt lower and lower.
Come on, people! Let's keep it clean. I'm talking about the strangest place you've ever tested your blood sugar! Sheesh!
As many of you know all too well, lows don't play fair. They don't wait until the ride is over. They just strike when they damn well please.

Yesterday I had to go up to the school because the nurse called to say that Olivia had pulled out her site. On an overhead projector. I have no idea how she did it (and forgot to ask when she got home), but she did. Off I trotted, with a new site, the Sil-serter and a back up reservoir in hand.
When I got to the school, I had to cool my heels in the nurse's office waiting room. When I was a kid (no, it's not the up hill, both ways in the snow barefoot line, so hush), the nurse's office was a desk and a cot. It was dim and cool in there, a great place to lie down when you were feeling poorly or *ahem* hadn't studied for a test. I remember lying there, tracing a pattern in the ancient wallpaper and trying not to freak out over the crucifix hung over the head of the bed.

Olivia had her holiday concert last night. She was all excited about it - not nervous at all. "God, mum, you should just
hear some of the other girls. They get so nervous that they feel sick. What is wrong with them?" Oh, the scorn of a 13 year-old girl.
I had her check before the concert - she was 249 and bolused to correct that. I'd rather have her run a bit high for these things that go too low. She did that once. It wasn't pretty.

Today was not an ideal day diabetes-wise. With a 261 mg/dl in the middle of the night, a 39 mg/dl upon waking and three completely unexplained bloodsugars higher than 340 mg/dl this afternoon, diabetes kicked my butt with a vengeance. I am thankful that days like these are few and far between, but man, the rollercoaster is not fun and I feel like hell tonight.
