I hit a major snag with my blood sugar control in the last few weeks. My blood sugar started going up, up, up. And my insulin doses followed. At 28 weeks pregnant, I knew this was to be expected, but I didn't quite know what to do about it.
Really weird things started happening. Like feeling low 15 minutes after eating lunch and testing to find my blood sugar dropped 20 to 30 points after eating. But having just eaten, I would ride it out on the couch for a while until it started to come up. (I am so grateful to have the luxury of working from home!)
Wouldn't you know it, at the two-hour mark, it was higher than it should be (my doctor set my goals at 120 two-hours after meals, with a note not to worry if its 130). Concerned but not consumed with worry, I'd test again an hour later and find it was yet higher. Another hour later, higher still. (READ MORE)

A number of you left comments on my post about leaving little clues about my diabetes diagnosis for my boss in an email. Several of you were pretty critical of my actions.

 

Long-time readers of my blog, though, will know that I’ve decided to take a different approach at my new job. When I was diagnosed, I was less than a year into a job I loved with people I loved and respected. I had no problem telling just about everyone about my diagnosis. In fact, I felt relieved knowing everyone knew.

I was cleaning the kitchen today.  Since I was laid off this has taken a chunk of my daily life.  I never much cared for the tedium of kitchen cleaning, but now that we're all home so much more, eating 3 times more meals here, the chore has become relentless. But I digress.

 

As I was unloading the dishwasher, it struck me that I wouldn't want my endo to see the current dishload.  There were too many pizza wheels and glasses and not enough mixing spoons and silverware.  Maybe Dr. R-J wouldn't get the connection, but a forensic kitchen examiner would have it in a heartbeat.  CSI: Cordon Bleu, anyone?

When I was first diagnosed with diabetes, I read everything I could get my hands on about it. The fear of complications kept me in line. In fact, when faced with the temptation of cookies and cake, the phrase "blindness, dialysis and amputation" helped me walk away with not so much as a taste.
I guess that's why I took it so hard when my vision started blurring recently. At my post-pregnancy opthalmalogist visit, my eyeglass prescription had changed so much in the last six months, the doctor suggested checking again in a few months instead of getting a new prescription now. He explained my recent high blood sugars (thanks to that third attempt at diet and exercise "control") had temporarily distorted my vision. There are no signs of perminent damage, yet. Get my sugars under tighter control for a two to three months and we'll check again. (READ MORE)

There is a lot going on today. A lot. I guess I'm not very happy, but I am trying my darndest to be. I am dealing with more emotions today than I can ever remember having. I have a lot of personal stuff happening and I have been trying to share as much of that with you all as I can. As you know, I am in the middle of a life changing experience with my career. Just last night I sent my resume, cover letter, and references off to what I hope to be my next, and potentially last employer. Also, so much is going on in the world with people suffering, hurting, and being sick. And last but not least, I wasn't able to train martial arts today, and instead I ate a freaking pizza.

Type 1 isn't known as an adult disease. Until a few years ago, I didn't know anyone who called my diabetes Type 1 Diabetes. It was Juvenile Diabetes, Childhood Onset Diabetes... You get the gist. And when I was a child, I never thought about diabetes as something adults had in spite of the fact that I knew several Type 1 diabetic adults during my youth.
Anyhow, today, I was thinking, there should be some rules for being an adult with Type 1. Perhaps you'll think of some to add to the list I've come up with.
H is for How to be an adult with Type 1.
1. Test even though you're busy. Log even though you're busy. Bolus even though you're busy. Are you sensing a theme? As an adult, rule #1 is pay attention - even though you've got a lot of other things going on. It's a challenge, but diabetes needs to be a priority. (READ MORE)

I checked, double checked and triple checked the TSA website to make sure I knew every law before I made my flight. I found out diabetics can carry water, juice and all supplies on board the plane. I read all my rights when or if they searched me or my bag. (READ MORE)

I've swallowed my pride and decided to apply for disability services here at school. They can offer me a few resources that I do not have access to otherwise. Most importantly, they give me the ability to register early for class and to notify my professor's that there is a legitimate health issue that I deal with.

 

The past two semesters, I've considered doing it, but I've also thought it was too embarrassing. But finally, things have gotten to the point where I'm realizing that it's not embarrassing, it's reality. So I've taken the initial steps to go through with it.
