I am not a number. -- "Number 6", The Prisoner
One of the questions asked in a recent #dsma chat had to do with the people we live and work with who are familiar enough with our diabetes care to support us, make sure we have appropriate food and drink as needed, who know how and when to administer glucagon, and what to tell the folk at 911 about us. Some debate arose over the common patient-community designation of these individuals as "Type 3s".

Runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, congestion.
Most people who read this set of symptoms think, "common cold" or today, "rhinovirus". But it also describes the symptoms suffered by many with seasonal or other allergies.
The general term is "histamine reaction" — and while these symptoms don't describe all histamine reactions (hives, localized swelling, and/or general bloating can also be present in a histamine reaction) — the correct diagnosis should be histamine reaction until an underlying cause (allergies, rhinovirus, influenza, etc.) is determined.

A box within a box within a box within a box.
Sometimes, that's the best description of my, your, or anyone else's diabetes.
The big box is Diabetes itself.
The next box is the "Type" box. Usually only two of them fit into the large case, but some folk will cram in two or more smaller boxes ("Gestational", "LADA", "MODY", and others) as well.

Partly, anyway. My doctor took me off insulin last Thursday. Since then, my dose of Metformin has doubled to 1,000 mg twice a day, and my blood sugar soared to new heights. I gave the experient a good week, and it failed miserably.
At first, I felt like it was my fault. I hadn't put forth 100 percent effort to avoid white flour, sugar, corn syrup and the like. Actually, I was doing a really bad job at it. I could feel my diet and blood sugar spiraling out of control and felt helpless to stop it. The more I tried to stay away from the bad foods, the more they called my name. I came to realize it was that insane high blood sugar hunger screaming to be fed like some monster. (READ MORE)

Since getting my hands on a review copy of Jenny Ruhl's new book, "Blood Sugar 101: What they don't tell you about diabetes" (Technion Books), I haven't been able to put it down.
Finally, an intellegent book about type 2 diabetes that tells it like it is and offers practical advice without talking down to me or engaging in quackery. Reading it, I feel like I did when met best friend Sue in middle school or when first found Diabetic Mommy. There's someone else who gets it! (READ MORE)

One of the more heated discussions going through the diabetes online community is whether or not type 1 diabetes should be renamed to avoid it being lumped in with the public perception of type 2 diabetes. "Don't blame me because my pancreas decided to crap out on me!" is the rallying call -- implying, rightly or wrongly, that type 2 diabetes is always caused by the person with diabetes, through a combination of poor diet choices and poor lifestyle choices. Many people with type 2 diabetes -- particularly the young, fit, and not-obese -- also take issue with that perception.Â

Yesterday, I responded to the question about "things you wish your doctors knew about diabetes and the daily task of living [with it] by mentioning that many healthcare providers' knowledge of diabetes is incomplete and/or out of date. Rather than be a part of the problem, I've proposed a first-draft solution — some things I would put into a Continuing Medical Education (CME) syllabus to fill in some of those gaps. I'm sure I'm missing rather a chunk of stuff, but then again, this is a first draft.
If I were to develop a syllabus to fill in the gaps in professional diabetes education, as I perceive they exist today, these are some of the things I would consider:
