For some reason my fingers are not being very nice to me. All day I have had to squeeze my fingers so hard they hurt. They will not give up any blood! I literally tried all of my fingers three times before I finally got enough for my machine.
Now I do remember back in the day when it seemed to take a "gallon" of blood to get a glucose reading so I am thankful it is not that way any longer. But my One Touch takes a much bigger drop then some of the other machines I have used. Unfortunately my insurance will not cover any other strips but the One Touch. Again, I am thankful for that but I just need to vent a little.
My hand hurts from squeezing my fingers. I can hardly feel my poked fingers anyway so you know it's bad when the squeezing hand is hurting. I have tried the alternate site testing but it is hard for me to trust it. (READ MORE)

Up and down. That's the way it's been lately. Numbers are up, numbers are down, nothing is making sense, patterns are confusing, emotions are frustrating. I've seen some wildly high numbers in the past week or two that are completely blowing my mind. Go to bed at 109 mg/dl, but wake up at 5 am in the 300's.

Low blood sugars that happen in the middle of the night really suck! You're dead asleep, and then all of the sudden your dreams start getting confusing and weird. You start feeling like you should probably drag yourself out of bed and get something from your sugar stash. You barely have the energy to get up and then once you do you stumble around and nearly black out. You feel confused and you act and look as though you've had WAY too much to drink. Then after you climb back into bed you just sit there for a while and you try to wait patiently while your sugar goes back up or until you feel good enough to fall back asleep.
Well, that's what happened to me last night, and what I tend to experience almost once a week.

It's crunchy and sweet -- even when it's not a sugar cereal. It's wet and soft and smooth. It's great for dinner or breakfast.
I love cereal. It used to be the only thing I ate for breakfast: two bowls of Cheerios and I was set all morning. Occasionally I'd mix it up with a bagel or something, but my breakfast staple was cereal. This was, of course, pre-diabetes.
It was an accident that I found out what milk does to my blood sugar. I was pregnant and taking only Lantus at the time. One morning the milk was gone and I drank water with my PB (no J) sandwich (yeah, yuck). I had a pretty blunt "ah-ha" moment when I saw the post prandial.

Right now, I'm staring at my logbook trying to decide what changes I need to make and what else I want to try with all this. This past week has been a bit rocky so my averages are all over the place. Mostly, they're high. At least higher than I want them to be. So while I'm staring at my book, I'm trying to piece together this last week and figure out what is going on with these numbers.

Saturday night, I raised my evening Lantus dose to 16 units and kept my morning dosage at 13 units. I also moved the evening dose up by about three hours, hoping to stop those highs that sent me into sleep at 218 and 241. I also took the plunge and decided to do a trial run of boluses with the pump instead of pen or syringe. And I'm still as perplexed, but this time for the opposite reason.
Within a few hours of bolusing with the pump, I saw a 55 that bounced up to 114, 131, and back down to 93. Several snacks throughout the night left me at a morning number of 130. For most of Sunday, I stayed under 150 with a brief spike after working out. After dinner on Sunday night, I dropped to 84 then 69. And after about an hour, I was 146. But at 4am, I woke to an unexpected 47. I also lowered my evening Lantus to 15 units since I'd seen a rise in lows after the 16 units.

It's been close to 36 hours since I went off the pump and back on the Lantus and Humalog routine. Luckily, I'm still alive and kicking. Sure there have been a few bumps in the road, but overall it hasn't been that bad at all.
I started out with 10 units of Lantus on Wednesday morning, but stayed between 220 and 250 the entire day. So when the evening injection came around, I decided to increase the Lantus to 12 units. But I still woke up at 223 after a pre-bed reading of 255. So I raised the Lantus again this morning to 14 units.
After breakfast, I saw the highest number yet: 371. I wasn't so excited, and didn't feel so well. I bolused for the number and waited for the decline. And a few hours later, I was 176 after eating a banana.

I wasn't at all pleased with how switching to a 1:30pm Lantus injection was working for me. It was just too stressful to make sure I took it exactly then and too bothersome to compete with a post-breakfast high and a lack-of-Lantus high. So I switched.
I split the dose for 1:30pm and roughly 11:30pm (I say roughly because the last two days I've been scrambling around the mall or at Christmas tree lots getting my mom's house ready for Friday's party). I started with a 20 unit and a 15 unit split (originally was on 36 units). I haven't had a chance to sit down with the logbook (see said scrambling), but I have felt some differences.
First of all is my morning numbers. Those morning lows are back. This morning, a nice and early 55 woke me up...along with my mother on the phone and the cat in my ear. And this is after a 64 yesterday morning which made me lower the 15 units to 12 units.

Tuesday night, I switched my Lantus over to a once-per-day shot instead of the split doses I'd been using previously. I started with 22 units of Lantus at 8pm. I knew I'd see some highs, but I didn't want to risk an unexpected night low after making the first switch.
And I did see some elevation. I ran mostly in the 180-290 range all through Wednesday, which wasn't as high as I was expecting really. I made sure to consider food in the highs, along with the usual post-breakfast spike. And I was confident that a few more units of Lantus might do the trick (or at least get me closer).

I've had quite a few decent numbers since I've started the whole Lantus switch from the pump. Wednesday was a bit rocky, as well as the first part of Thursday. But by two PM on Thursday, I was seeing stable levels close to range. It hasn't been completely stable or all that easy, but it's been comforting to already see numbers like 120 pop up on the meter screen.
Getting the night numbers to cooperate has been a bit challenging. For Friday morning, I woke up at 171 after 16 units of Lantus the night before. But Saturday morning, I woke up at 66 after 16 units of Lantus the previous night. Last night, I did 17 units of Lantus at 10PM, dropped to 69 at 3AM, but woke up at a nice round 110. So obviously, I need tweaking.
