I once blogged about how wonderful the world would be if only Charlie would eat Jell-O - one of the few "free" snack foods we have to work with. Back then, he would take pleasure in poking it, squashing it with a spoon or dropping it in his brother's diaper, but nothing more. He refused to eat it. (READ MORE)

In case you didn't know that acronym stands for, "There's No Such Thing As A Free Lunch." I remember those words on the chalk board during my Economics class in high school. Yesterday this saying came to mind again.
During the day I get a phone call from one of our salespeople at work letting me know that he wants to treat the office employees to lunch as an early Valentine's gift. All the gals in the office were excited to get a free lunch but see it as a test of my will power.
Having to count points and carbs means I plan for most meals. I have spent the first weeks of the New Year luke-warm about my weight loss and I just recently got the fire burning again. Free lunches come with a price that I am not ready to pay. (READ MORE)

It was a birthday party on Saturday. My wife, kids, and I all trekked up to her Aunt's house for an afternoon of family fun.
I must tell you that I am very lucky because my wife's family is pretty cool. We always have a good time together and when we left this particular party my son made it a point to say, "I could stay there all night. I have a lot of fun with all of them." They really are great people. (READ MORE)

Susanne went to Children's Hospital to talk to a family therapist about Charlie. He's been crying a lot in school.

We do everything we can to make him feel like a normal boy, but let's be honest – living with diabetes is not normal. There are times when he must eat Jell-O in school rather than the cookies or pretzels he thought he was going to have.

So he cries. He rubs his eyes with his fists, runs into the hallway or bathroom and cries. Charlie's teacher has expressed that he's becoming more and more upset when high blood sugars prevent him from eating what he wants to eat. I'm sure the high blood sugar in itself contributes to his inability to control his emotions.

Susanne thought the meeting with the therapist went well.

Here are some "Don'ts" Susanne came away with:

First: Hi! It's been like a month since you've heard from me. Well, not really, but I only posted four times in November. Four times! Hello! Where was I? Frankly, I just don't know. I guess nothing all that remarkable happened in November.

Except I had The Mr. insert a Dexcom sensor into the back of my arm (ala Kerri) for a change of pace from my abdomen and the darn thing went bad after less than 12 hours.

Oh, and there was Thanksgiving complete with about 20 friends and relatives at my parents' house. Bonus to living in the desert: eating Thanksgiving dinner outside in the 80-degree temps. Loved. It.

And Thanksgiving brings up what I really wanted to talk about in this post, though I haven't really figured out how to write it coherently. So I'll start with this: It's not all about sugar, people!

A few blogs ago, I wrote about feeling like a bad dad when high blood sugar forced me to deny Charlie the ice cream I had promised.

I wanted to address the following question from a reader.

My question to you is (and you'll have to forgive me since I'm fairly new at this) couldn't you just have given your son an option of getting an injection if he wanted ice cream? We have a supplemental dose for such instances.

I’ve had a really hard time with my writing/not writing lately. In December I blogged only once, and so far this month I’ve blogged twice.

This is kind of weird for me because I’m so used to writing so often. It hurts, actually, that I haven’t been doing more of it. It’s not for lack of trying, though. I’ve written countless Post-It notes to myself with blog topics and have every intention of writing when I get home and then I don’t.

And it’s not like I’m forgetting to do it, I just don’t do it. Or I decide that I’d rather do something else. I think about the Post-It note stuck to my calendar and about all the things I would say in the blog and how wonderfully eloquent I would be. And then I just don’t do it.

It's been one week since The Mr. had gastric bypass and he's doing really well. He rode his motorcycle the more than 20 miles to his firs post-op nutrition class yesterday! (Don't worry, it's not a crotch-rocket-type motorcycle.)

Since he has developed insulin resistance -- and also because it's apparently protocal after gastric bypass -- The Mr. has been checking his blood sugar four times a day: fasting, before lunch and dinner, and at bedtime.
