What would you say if you had the symptoms of a common medical condition, but if after a year, none of the usual therapies worked?
What would you say if your doctor insisted that he had correctly diagnosed the disease as something chronic, but not necessarily debilitating, and was giving you medicines that all should be working?
Now, what would you say if there was a less-common form of that medical condition that had all the same symptoms, but was caused by a completely different disease -- one that was immediately life-threatening -- and which required a different form of therapy? What would you say if your doctor refused to consider the possibility of that less-common disease? And what would you say if there were two common tests that could confirm whether or not the less-common diagnosis was correct, but your doctor refused to order them?

"A little bit of OCD isn’t necessarily such a bad thing for a person with diabetes."
So said the therapist to Susanne on the phone as she made an appointment for us to see him next week.
He comes highly recommended from Children’s Hospital. The fact that he’s type 1 is an added bonus. Well, for us. Not so much for him.
Charlie is a really good, sweet kid, but there is no denying, he is exhausting. It often feels like there is eight of him. It’s like that bad Michael Keaton movie – Multiplicity. Charlies are everywhere, wanting something ALL. THE. TIME.
Top of the stairs – "Can I have lunch now?"
In the bathroom – "Can I have a chocolate egg?"

I know this is not a popular view, but I believe I will live a long life and all of it with diabetes. No, I do not believe there will be a cure in my lifetime. Yeah, that’s kind of crappy to say, but I just don’t see enough progress happening (of course I’m really an outsider when it comes to all things cure related) and there is so much money in the treatment of diabetes right now that I think the focus and priorities are not in a place to support a cure.
That’s not to say that I don’t think there will be significant progress on the cure front, I just don’t think I’ll live out my days as a non-diabetic. I believe I’ll be wearing my pancreas on my hip in some shape or another forever. And that’s a long forever, people.

That’s right. I don’t like to cook. Baking, yes. Well, mostly. I often have grand ideas about, say, baking gadzoodles of Christmas cookies, and after the second round of sugar cookies I’ve thrown in the towel.
It took me a long time to figure this out, actually. I like to look at cookbooks and think about how good certain dishes would be for dinner. And then I put those ingredients on the grocery list and actually buy them, but then when it comes around to actually cooking? I’m so not in the mood.

I am at a loss for words lately. It's a prolonged case of writer's block. I just have nothing much to say about any of this. I mean, what else can I say?
Nothing changes, yet everything is so different. It's the same day in, day out. The routine goes on constantly. How can I keep repeating what this life is like when we've all heard it (and lived it) every day before?
I'm just not sure what to say about something that is sometimes so monotonous. I feel as if I'm writing the same words over and over, the same topics again and again. Every day is just a jumble of finger sticks, insulin injections, and ups and downs. Every day is just a day with or without pain, a fight against fatigue or a celebration of energy.

I got so frustrated with my A1c number and my recent averages that I started logging in detail again. I'd planned to start after finals (around December 14), but I just couldn't take another week or two of 200 level blood sugars. So I brought out my UltraSmart meter which logs carbs, insulin levels, and my blood sugars.
So for the past few days, I've been logging my carb intake to the best of my ability (and trying to pay closer attention to meals that I can accurately judge), every unit of insulin, and testing as much as possible. I've also been taking this opportunity to use a different carb ratio than normal, which seems to be helping. My averages are down with less fluctuation and far fewer nasty highs.

“What about honey?”
We came back to "Honey" 4 times in this exchange. I was going nuts.
Here is the deal, I am working at a church retreat in a few weeks and I was approached by the person in charge of food for the weekend regarding food choices. Apparently there are going to be some other people with diabetes attending the weekend and they thought they would get my suggestions.

I can't believe that March is already here. Wasn't it just yesterday that I was celebrating New Year's with Marvin? Or attending my graduate school orientation? It doesn't feel like we should be a quarter into the year, feeling the effects of spring, and planning summer vacations.
This March is filling up fast. I have a trip home scheduled. I'm moving to my new apartment. Work events are piling up quickly. And there's a conference that I plan to attend as well.
Despite all that, I'm hoping to get a few other things accomplished as well. I began making my list last night and realized that it might take a little longer than I planned. It seems to never end.

I've never been a trendy person. In junior high when Bass loafers were all the rage, I didn't get a pair until they were almost out of style. There's a lot of that in my life. (READ MORE)

From time to time, a heated discussion will erupt around the terms and phrases "prediabetes", "borderline diabetes", and "beating diabetes". The basic gist of the debate goes like this:
Someone will post that he was told he has "borderline diabetes" or "prediabetes", or that he had type 2 diabetes, but since he changed his diet, got off his diabetes medications, and has normal lab results, he has reversed or cured his diabetes.
