If by some miracle diabetes is cured, I shall name my next two children after the two cancer drugs that made it possible. We will adopt two Eastern European brothers and name them Gleevec and Sutent. I just hope everyone gets along.

Charlie: Mom! Gleevec called me Sugar Boy!

Susanne: Carey, can you deal with this? I'm running out to buy more cake.

Carey: Gleevec, stop teasing your brother. Besides, he's cured now. We don't call him Sugar Boy anymore.

Susanne: We never … oh, forget it. Charlie, do you want some pie too? I can ask them to sprinkle jelly beans on top. Or would you rather Skittles?

Like many in the diabetes community, my wife and I were pretty disturbed when we heard the premise of Hannah Montana's "No Sugar, Sugar" episode that was scheduled to air last night.

The episode tackles the issue of juvenile diabetes, but not as we know it to be. A major, recurring character on the show gets diabetes. Oliver, one of Miley's best friends, is ashamed at first and tries to hide his disease from his friends.

Do you remember the diabetes-themed Hannah Montana episode last year that was leaked onto the Internet and swiftly pulled before it was aired on the Disney Channel?

 Well, it’s back.

You might recall the disappointment many in the diabetes community expressed after seeing diabetes depicted inaccurately - aiding the very misconceptions we work so hard to dispel. Terms like "sugar boy," written as a weak attempt to deploy canned laughter and delivered by young actors unaware of the potential damage it could cause, did not go over well with most of us.

Olivia has a tendency to run high after exercise. I don't know why, I just know that she does. What we usually do is have her eat something light an hour before practice and bolus her a little more than usual for the carbs eaten - usually 30% more. It seems to work, although like many things with this stupid disease, what works one day might not work the next.

Last night, Olivia got home from soccer practice and said she'd taken out her site because it was hurting her when she ran. I told her that was fine, but that she should take a shower and we'd put in a new one when she was done. This was around 7:15.

I heard about the new Hannah Montana episode from Kerri's Six Until Me blog last week. I knew that Disney had a personal interest in diabetes because of the Jonas brother who has type 1. Honestly, I really wasn't surprised to learn that an episode dealing with a diabetes diagnosis was scheduled.

However, I was surprised after I watched the unaired episode to see how poorly diabetes was portrayed by Disney. I gave them some credit for even approaching the subject and trying to make it as simple as possible for the half hour show. But I couldn't excuse them for their blatant disregard of everything diabetics have worked for since the introduction of carb counting.

People often say they're sorry when told that Olivia has type 1 diabetes. They get that look - you know the one: the eyes squint a little, they cock their heads to one side and their mouths make that little moue of sorrow. "Oh, I'm so sorry, that must be so hard. The poor girl."

With all the Hannah Montana and Halloween hullabaloo, I forgot to mention Charlie's last endo appointment. I actually like these appointments. It's a day off from work and a rare opportunity for Susanne and I to spend time with just Charlie. And there's always a hopeful thought that this time we'll get good A1c news.

Heading into Philadelphia on Route 95 we pass a factory on our left before the skyline comes into view with the sun reflecting brightly off of the Comcast Center building. I ask Charlie what he thinks the factory is making.

"I think it's a factory that makes other factories," he says.

I can't post all the photos here, but if you go over to my other blog, Major Bedhead, you can see the ridiculous post I put up in honour of Olivia's 13th birthday.

I often grimace when thinking about having another teenager in the house, but so far, Olivia's been a great kid. Yes, she's moody and listens to FAAAAAR too much Hannah freakin' Montana, but all in all, she's fantastic.

She lives with diabetes rolled into her life and is amazingly well-adjusted about it. She just rolls along with it and amazes me nearly every day. She doesn't seem to have pity parties, she doesn't complain that it's unfair (and if she did, I'd certainly feel like she'd be entitled to feel that way), she just does it. Sometimes she'll roll her eyes or sigh when it's time to do a site change, but 97% of the time, she's OK with it.

I have a nearly 7-year-old daughter and a nearly 4-year-old daughter; therefore, I watch way too much Hannah Montana.

I admit: It's not a bad show. As far as kid and tweeny shows go, it's pretty tolerable. And Miley Cyrus is pretty cute. No. 2 and No. 3 really like the show and will watch the same episode until I'm ready to puke. Yes, we saw the movie that many times, too.

The first time the Hannah Montana+diabetes issue came up I really didn't pay much attention. I'm not sure why. Maybe Hannah hadn't invaded our lives at that point.

When Oliver fell down the school stairwell, I’ll admit I was skeptical. It was the same footage from the original Hannah Montana episode, and I don’t think I liked it the first time either. I didn’t like that the first depiction of diabetes was that of a kid falling down the stairs.

But Susanne, being the voice of reason, was quick to mention that it could happen; if he was very low.

Charlie had another take on it.

"He’s high," I think, Charlie said.

"I’m silly when I’m low, but if I’m really high, my eyes feel funny and I get a little dizzy."

Hats off to Disney.

Sugar Boy? Gone.

Oliver’s zombie-like lust for sweets that he couldn’t touch? Completely rewritten.
