With all the talk of New Year's Resolutions and dieting, I keep coming across advice to keep a food diary. The articles usually point out that research shows keeping a food diary "even for just one day" can aid your weight loss efforts. (I haven't been able to find these studies, but maybe I'm just using the wrong search engine or key words.)
Keeping a food journal has been part of my routine for a very long time now. In fact, I have several editions of notebooks dedicated to logging every morsel of food that goes into my mouth (along with blood sugar readings and insulin dosing, of course).
It's also a cornerstone to the Weight Watchers program. "If you bite it, write it" is a common phrase heard in meetings. My leader, Kim, started what we call "The Magic Traveling Journal." The 12-week planner gets passed around to a different group member each week. (READ MORE)

There's probably a good reason why iconic film characters don't tend to have diabetes. I was curious to see how diabetes might play out in a classic scene from a classic film.  Stay tuned for more to come. Here's the first installment. It comes from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

 

The scene:

 

After landing on Yavin IV, the Death Star plans are analyzed by the Rebel Alliance and a weakness is discovered that could potentially destroy the deadly space station. Teenage moisture farmer and Jedi-in-training Luke Skywalker, recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, is called upon to destroy the evil Death Star and save the Rebel base from total obliteration.

 

Luke's X-wing speeds down the trench; three TIE fighters, still in perfect unbroken formation, tail close behind.

 

Biggs looks around at the TIE fighters. He is worried.

This is not the post I planned to write this morning.

 

Having a nearly one-hour commute (everyone flees the city in the summer, so traffic is much, much lighter) often gives me a lot of time to think. This morning I thought about what a crappy mood I had been in on Sunday and that it had carried over to this morning.

 

I tried to blame it on the kids: a four-day weekend trying to keep the kids entertained and not arguing and generally not getting on my nerves is exhausting.

 

I tried to blame it on AF: though she has left the building.

When resources are scarce, it is human nature to try to prioritize and cut back until the situation improves. Usually, these are either short-term or seasonal shortages, giving us some idea of how long we will need to endure -- a sort of "countdown" calendar to work against. When we don't know how long the shortages will last, when necessities such as food, water, and medicine will return, we hunker down into what is called a "siege mentality". The problem with a siege mentality is that it can lead into a downward spiral, with the shortages getting more and more pronounced, until it seems impossible that there will be an outlet or that it will arrive in time... or until the besieged die.

Too often, we look at the 7-day, 14-day, and 30-day trends on our blood glucose monitors, see numbers that look great (or horrid), and rather than seeing an A1c that confirms those readings, we get a number that would appear to have come completely out of left field. (Or Mars. Or the Andromeda Galaxy. It's hard to say exactly where.) We can either scratch our heads and wonder why the numbers aren't correlating, or we can take out our manual readings logs, our meter downloads, our CGM downloads, and our personal journals and try to figure "what we are doing wrong".

Remember when I wrote recently about having bacteria in my urine? For the third time this year. Remember when I wrote about the first two times earlier this year -- when I had this problem twice within about two months? Remember that Dr. C didn't think it was such a big deal? Remember that I off-handedly blamed it on my water bottles, but didn't really have any "evidence"?

 

Well, now I do! In a recent Diabetes Health article, plastic packaging is linked to diabetes and other health problems: Higher urinary levels of the commonly used chemical, BPA, are linked with cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

I took Olivia to the pediatrician on Monday, to go over the blood work. Everything came back fine. Perfect. So this stomach thing has all of us stumped now.

I have a referral to a gastroenterologist because the pediatrician doesn't know what's wrong with Olivia. Fantastic.

The celiac panel came back negative, which was nice, although I've since read on the CWD parents mailing list that kids can have celiac without having symptoms or a funky blood test. That makes no sense to me, but people are saying they eliminated gluten from their children's diets and the stomach issues went away. Something to ask about, I guess.

I called an emergency meeting with my endo last week. For the first time in my pregnancy, my blood sugar was out of my control. My fasting numbers, which I prided myself in keeping at the low end of the healthy range, suddenly shot above range and my post-meal readings were so erratic I actually threw out an insulin pen, convinced it was defective.
On MDI for the duration of my pregnancy, I did what I was told to do-upped my insulin-carb ratio, cut back on carbs, reviewed my food journal. I even checked to see if I'd consumed a bag of chocolate truffles in my sleep.
Clearly, I encountered the dreaded insulin resistance that plagues most type 2s and hits hard during the second half of pregnancy. I'd never had this problem before. Frantic, I posted on all my diabetes sites, begging for advice. The answer: Exercise more. (READ MORE)

I’ve had a really hard time with my writing/not writing lately. In December I blogged only once, and so far this month I’ve blogged twice.

 

This is kind of weird for me because I’m so used to writing so often. It hurts, actually, that I haven’t been doing more of it. It’s not for lack of trying, though. I’ve written countless Post-It notes to myself with blog topics and have every intention of writing when I get home and then I don’t.

 

And it’s not like I’m forgetting to do it, I just don’t do it. Or I decide that I’d rather do something else. I think about the Post-It note stuck to my calendar and about all the things I would say in the blog and how wonderfully eloquent I would be. And then I just don’t do it.

Last night I used two of the techniques D ask me to use to help with my eating issues. First, she asked me to journal with three specific phrases:
1. I feel (blank) about (blank).
2. What would I like to do about it?
3. I choose to: problem solve or distract.

 

I had been hungry all day. Part of it was my fault for not eating enough breakfast or lunch. By the time I got to dinner I was famished. I started thinking about going out for ice cream after dinner. Even a walk -- in the 103* heat -- after dinner didn't seem to distract me enough. I kept thinking about ice cream for at least an hour after the walk. Some applesauce helped.
