My belly is grumbling, and not because it's dinner time. Anyone who's ever had a run-in with sugar-free candy knows what I'm talking about.
It started out innocently enough. Charged with the task of cleaning out the basement of his parents' house, hubby found his childhood Easter basket yesterday. He was excited. He wanted to share it. And what better timing. But considering our 5-month-old son is too young to get the whole meaning of the Easter Bunny, baskets and candy, he thought he'd be sweet and fill the basket for me.
Knowing that I'm doing my best to avoid carbs and keep my blood sugar under control, he did the thoughtful thing and bought me sugar-free candies. Chocolates, marshmallow bunnies and those good jellybeans that come in a surprizing varieties of flavors and taste like real, gourmet jellybeans, not some sub-par, sugar-free imposter. (READ MORE)

**I hate that almost every holiday has turned into a candy holiday. For several years now I have drastically cut down on the amount of candy I give the kids for Easter (along with other holidays). This year, I went shopping for presents and Easter basket goodies on Saturday, which depending on how you think about it was either a great idea or a terrible idea. There were not many choices left in the candy aisle, and about 20 of us standing around looking at reject candy. Being limited, though, was great. Each kid got about six of those tiny chocolate eggs, and about six plastic eggs that had a handful of Skittles or jelly beans in them. I was pretty proud of that. And then on Easter we went to a friend's house. There was an egg hunt. And Uh. Mah. Gawd. did they make out with some serious loot. I emptied all the eggs last night into our community stash of candy where we have Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day leftovers. The bucket is overflowing now. Grrr. (READ MORE)

I like to stay on the pulse of diabetes-related news. I want to know the results of the latest clinical trials taking place and I'm interested in learning about the newest technologies. If oxygen or polyester or garden gnomes are now harmful to diabetics, I'd like to be the first to know.

I also have two other children without diabetes and I'd like to keep it that way. So, I seek guidance in the many diabetes headlines that are published each day. Let's take a peek at this week's breaking diabetes news headlines.

Having people over your house for Easter is stressful enough. Running around fetching a beer for someone or pouring a glass of wine or opening a jar of pickles or dancing to Viva Las Vegas on Wii, I kept seeing Charlie out of the corner of my eye with crackers in his mouth. Not a diabolical act for a normal 9 year old. But throw in diabetes and it's a potential mess.

"Charlie, how many have you had?"

He says four, maybe five.

"SUSANNE," I tattle like a child, "HE'S JUST EATING AWAY!!!"

The juggling master takes the asparagus out of the oven, puts a lasagna into the oven, mixes olive oil into a large bowl of sliced potatoes, pours Ben a cup of apple juice and says,

"Just bolus for 20."

I bend down and press Charlie's buttons.

The chirping of birds strikes fear into my heart.

It means it's morning and I never got up in the middle of the night to check Charlie's blood sugar.

Charlie is downstairs on the floor. His friend is sleeping over. It's 5:45 am. I start to have horrible, horrible thoughts. So horrible, I can't even say.

I want to check him but I don't want to wake them up so early. I do some hypotheticals.

He was 100 at midnight with .4 units of insulin active. I gave him a 4 ounce juice box. If the .4 units dropped him 60 points or so and the juice brought him up about 70 points, they cancel each other out and we'd be looking at a perfect blood sugar of about 110 come morning. He should be OK, right? Right??

All day I was fine. Normal mood. Normal Tuesday working from home. I felt fine.

It must have started when the kids got home from school. Rowdy as usual, and I guess I thought I was handling it OK. But thinking back, it did get to be too much and I had to send the girls to play outside.

But I thought I was handling it OK. I did feel a little anxious some time this afternoon, but I worked hard at focusing on not being anxious and I seemed to be handling it fine.

I seemed to be fine.

I was looking up places where we'll go this summer for three-day weekends to escape the heat. I remember the anxiety then. It seemed a little overwhelming and I had to step away from the computer.

But I seemed to be handling it OK. I thought that removing myself from what I thought was the source of anxiety would be enough.

The only thing I really remember about eating sugar free after I was first diagnosed in 1993 is sugar free Christmas chocolates and sugar free wafers. The chocolates were sent every year by my loving aunt who was just trying to be helpful. Little did she know that they were incredibly disgusting and no kid was going to devour them happily. The wafers were a different story. My grandma would buy them for me and to me, you couldn't even tell they were sugar free. They were crunchy, airy, and just delicious.

I don't really remember feeling like I wasn't getting certain foods or like I was so different from the other kids. Maybe I did and I've blocked it out. I do remember my mother always trying to make me feel included. Sugar free easter bunnies if my brothers got the real kind. Yogurt with a small amount of sprinkles. Little things to supplement the sugar free life.
