I love music.
Ever since I was a little kid I could sing and dance to every song on the Earth, Wind, and Fire greatest hits record. I would dance whenever Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder was played even if it was a jukebox in a crowded restaurant. And no matter the time of night, when Barney Miller’s theme song started my mother said I would come running from my room in my PJ’s to dance to the song in front of the TV.
I love playing it, listening to it, and even writing it sometimes. When I was a kid I played the trumpet. In Junior High learned percussion which I played throughout high school and in my 20’s I learned to play guitar. Lots of music always playing around my home and car. I love it.

Today is Earth Day and having grown up in an environmentally responsible household, I consciously make green decisions throughout my day. Turning off lights here, not wasting water there, paper over plastic… any little thing that I know eventually adds up in a big way. A difficult part of deciding on a pump, however, was the green impact it carried along with it. The OmniPod was designed to be worn for three days and then hucked in the trash… really? (READ MORE)

Yesterday after church my family and I went to spend the remainder of the day at Disneyland. We do not live too far from the "Happiest Place On Earth" so we try and purchase passes each year. My sister was going to be there celebrating her birthday so we met up with her and her fiancé for some fun in Mouseland.
Every time I checked my BG it was a little low for my liking. At one point I stumbled onto a low of 54 that I did not feel at all. I got my hands on a juice box that took me up to 65 in 15 minutes. It was a constant battle all day long.
When we finally made it back to the car to head home, I pulled out my meter to check my blood before we left. 65 again! I snatched up 4 glucose tabs from my car stash and hit the road. As we drove away my daughter started asking a bunch of questions about diabetes.
"Dad, can tell me again the difference between type 1's and type 2's? I don't think I remember." (READ MORE)

Charlie turns 7 tomorrow. Can you believe it? 7!
"So where do you want to go out to eat for your birthday?" I asked him last night.
"Surprise me," he answered.
"But make sure it's a place where all the waiters sing Happy Birthday to me," he added.
It's funny that he wants that. That sort of public revelry would be hell on Earth for Susanne or me if we were the intended target.
He looked puzzled.
"But how will they know it's my birthday? Do all of the restaurants have a big list of all the kids' birthdays?"
"No," I said. "The restaurants don't have Santa-type power. Mom or dad will tell the waiter or waitress that it's your birthday."

Now that my diabetes is back under control again, I have plenty of time and energy to obsess over other things. Namely my beautiful little boy, who's 7 months old already, and making sure the world is safe for him and future generations. (Note: This has absolutely NOTHING to do with diabetes!)
It started around Earth Day. We "celebrated" the day like any other day. My husband put pesticides on the front lawn (die grubs! die!) and I carted home a dozen (doubled) disposable plastic bags of groceries, including a big bag of Pampers. I then proceeded to clean the house, using standard petroleum-based cleaners and paper towels.
Needless to say, we weren't a very green household.

I'm thankful that Charlie has diabetes and not something devastatingly worse.
I'm thankful for the grungy little boys in Charlie's class that play with him and treat him no differently despite the fact that he's part machine. I'm thankful that for the moment, they think blood is cool.
I'm thankful for the absolutely massive amount of support we receive year after year as we desperately search for a cure.
I'm thankful for friends and family members who would drop the Earth for us in a New York minute.
I'm thankful for numbers like 98 and 102 that sometimes come as an unexpected gift from an unforgiving disease.
I'm thankful for this amazing diabetes community whose empathy and encouragement never tires.
I'm thankful for my wife, who has given up so much of herself to juggle the unrelenting demands of diabetes.
I'm thankful for my daughter who accepts the abundance of attention Charlie receives from us with compassion and grace. (READ MORE)

Sometimes my life gets in the way of this blog. Things have been crazy-busy around here for the last month. We've moved again and it's been nuts trying to get that accomplished with two toddlers underfoot.
Olivia went to camp again this year and had a great time. She seems to have made even more friends this year and spends a lot of time on the phone and the computer, chatting with them. I'm thrilled to see her forming such great bonds with these other girls. It's just too bad that most of them don't live closer.
While she was at camp, Olivia's blood sugars kept dropping very low. I'm sure it was all the extra activity, but at one point, they had a 3 hour overnight basal set to zero. That's NEVER happened at home. She's gradually gone back to needing more insulin, especially overnight, but her needs do seem to have dropped a tiny bit.

Après moi, le déluge.
In Genesis Chapter 9, G-d commands Noach to build a watertight vessel and to stock it with all species of life known to man. Following this interchange, the earth was subjected to forty days and forty nights of rain, sufficient to wash all living things -- except for those ensconced in the ark -- from the earth.

Sometimes, the weirdest things can set us off. Earlier today, Sara tweeted that she'd written a letter in rhyme, saying she was "#outofcontrol". I asked whether it was Alexandrine, Limerick, iambic pentameter, or something else, and that set my mind to composing "random diabetes limericks"...
Starting with...
A woman who had diabetes
Says her doc told her, "Never eat Wheaties.
The starches and fructose
Will spike up your glucose
And violate national treaties."
After coming up with the starting couplet of
A man who had lived with Type 1
For more years than the Earth saw the sun
it took me a while to finish it with
