"Exercise is key to lifetime management of type 2 diabetes".  How many times have we heard that or a variation of that statement?  dLife even has a whole section devoted to the topic.

 

I started picking up the exercise habit last summer, when I was laid off by my employer.  But I tried to get the habit for many years prior to that event.  If I only had exercised for all the months that I paid for gym memberships, I might not be writing first hand about type 2 diabetes!

After fighting lows on Glyburide last week, my doctor suggested trying just diet and exercise again. I thought he was crazy, it hasn't worked the last two times that I tried it, so why should it work this time. He gave it 80-percent odds of working. I jokingly asked if he wanted to put a friendly wager on it. I'm glad I didn't.
I am amazed to report that after one week without any anti-diabetes medication, my blood sugar had remained pretty normal for the most part. Granted, I'm only testing before meals, but still 90 percent of those readings have been under or close to 100. The one or two higher numbers I had were the result of a very bad night's sleep with a teething boy. Everything else, even bedtime numbers, was right in range. (READ MORE)

Exercise can be a really tricky thing when you're diabetic. Whether you're starting a new routine or just changing up an old one, it's tough to manage blood sugars alongside cardio and resistance training. The ups and downs add an extra edge to the difficulty of staying in shape.

 

Last week, I decided to try some new exercise classes which sent my blood sugars into a tailspin. Luckily, I was able to lower my insulin and fend off the lows...but I wasn't able to achieve the balance that I crave. This week I'm still working hard to get back into shape (and lose some more weight)...but mostly I'm trying to find that medium ground between the highs and lows of exercise.

In the past month, I've really gotten off track with my life. School and work seemed to be picking up, so I set a few things on the back burner (not to mention that I had a flare up with my other health conditions). The things that got pushed to the back were really major pieces of my diabetes management.

 

For one, I stopped working out in the way that I had been leading up to mid-March. Before Spring Break, I was working out at least twice a week (jogging 1.5-3 miles on the treadmill). But after Spring Break, life got in the way so I didn't make the time to add those workouts back into my schedule. I made all sorts of excuses: I was too tired, I wanted to go out with friends, I hadn't watched TV in forever, I had to study. Sadly, I think I've worked out a total of three or four times in the past month...that's just really disappointing.

I used to really like Dr. Oz. I loved the way his book YOU on a Diet makes complicated bodily functions make sense. I loved his simplistic approach to hunger and satiety, how you can satisfy your appetite centers with something other than food. I loved his easy recipes and simple exercise plan. It's all so, well, simple.
Dr. Oz is really good at simplifying things. Sometimes that's a good thing. Sometimes it's a bad thing. A very bad thing.
I was half-watching one of the morning TV talk shows earlier this week. When I saw the good doctor take the stage I turned up the volume. He was promoting his new book, YOU Staying Young. The segment featured a man and a woman who had followed the plan for three months and not only lost weight, they looked and felt younger and healthier than they had in years. (READ MORE)

Gilda Radner had a character on Saturday Night Live back in the day, when it really was funny and edgy.  Her name was Roseanne Rosannadanna, and she would tell Jane Curtin on the Weekend Update, “Well, Jane, it just goes to show you. It’s always something. If it’s not one thing, it’s another.”

 

I  spent the early part of the summer with a good handle on the diet half of the "diet & exercise" equation, but did little or no intentional exercise.  Then my job ended.  I found a really cheap deal at a decent nearby gym and joined up.

ADM logoThat's right, after LOWERING my dosage of metformin (generic glucophage) six months ago; my HbA1C went DOWN to 5.5 from 5.8.  Yes, I brought my average blood sugars DOWN by reducing my medication and increasing my cardio and strength training.  It's only a decrease of about 8 mg/dl but that's an average over 24/7.  AND I went from 2000 mg metformin to 1500 mg.   I know "they" say it can and should work that way, but I'm the first to admit I didn't believe it.  (Or that was my excuse for not trying harder).

My endo got back to me about the lows I've been experiencing on Glyburide. His reply: stop taking it. Once again, we're going to a "trial of diet and exercise." Excuse me? Didn't we just do this last month? I just checked the prescription bottle: Feb. 8.
I replied that we've tried diet and exercise twice in the last four months and frankly it didn't work. He asked me to just try it. He seems to think I'm far enough away from the pregnancy and its crazy hormones that diet and exercise just might work. I reminded him that it didn't work in the beginning of February either.
In fact, diet and exercise hasn't worked for me since 2005. Before I was pregnant I was taking oral meds to stimulate pancreatic function, then switched to insulin for pregnancy. (READ MORE)

For the past two weeks or so, my blood sugars have been running high. I had lowered my basals when I came back to school because I was having too many lows with my new schedule. I'm guessing that the basals need to be raised again since I've slowly adjusted to the schedule and I'm hitting exam times so my stress is increased.

If life is in fact a series of actions and consequences (and good Lord, I hope it isn't), then the fact that I eventually developed type 2 diabetes (known affectionately around the Rummel-Hudson compound as "the Beedies") is about as mysterious as why it gradually gets lighter outside at roughly the same time each morning. ("Did someone install stadium lights out there? Lets investigate. Oh, look, the sun...")
In college, I lived a life of excess. Despite the fact that I also drank way more than I should have, the main culprit was food. Glorious, wonderful food. I live in Texas, so take those food items and deep fry them. (To this day, the idea of chicken fried steak repulses my northern friends, and yet just now, when I typed those three lovely words, I got a little slobbery.) I drank too much soda, I ate too much crap, and if something green ever went past my lips, it was probably an M&M. (READ MORE)
