While driving to a funeral in the Catskill Mountains yesterday, I called home and Susanne said "don't ask."

Charlie has been terribly high lately. I stared ahead at the cars on Route 17 and a valley of farmlands in the distance and responded sarcastically after getting the wretched numbers out of her.

"Fantastic."

The highs at school have been affecting Charlie emotionally in the last few days. With a blood sugar of 370, he had to skip the munchkins from the first of two in-class birthday parties. He had sugar-free Jell-O instead and was on the edge of losing it.

The kids were being rowdy and loud after the teacher had asked for quiet time.

"The ones who are still talking should stand up and go get a slip," Mrs. R said firmly.

Only one kid stood up.

I had planned to walk my new walking route at least once this weekend so I'd know roughly how long it will take me. But, well that just didn't happen. With Saturday came a walk with the kids to the park and with Sunday came a well deserved three-hour nap.

I have to challenge myself with just about everything. And by challenge I mean I have to make it easy to succeed. So, I need a walking route that doesn't involve any shortcuts; nothing that will allow me to start out thinking I'll be walking for 2 miles and wind up going only 1.5.

For example, when I was a senior in college, I lived in an apartment with two friends. In an attempt to stretch my walk out, I included a small cul de sac. But, you guessed it, I often skipped it because it was easy to skip... just go straight instead of turning right.

Good grief, it's been hot here. Depending on which bank I was driving past, it was either 99, 101 or 103 today. Any one of them is too freakin' hot, especially for early June and most especially for New England. My Yankee bones don't like that kind of temperature one little bit.

Nor do Olivia's. She's been miserable the last few days. Weather had a lot to do with it and I've been making sure she's checking her blood sugars frequently and staying well hydrated. Her numbers haven't been great, but I don't know whether I can attribute that to the weather or to the fact that she just got dumped by her boyfriend.

It woke me up just before 2 a.m.

I was uncomfortable and confused; hot.

The Mr. was sleeping soundly next to me, but I didn't have the strength to shake him awake.

My heart was pounding like a cartoon character in love -- in and out of my chest.

I felt like I was hyperventilating.

Finally awake and aware of what was happening to me, I eyed my meter; it was just an arm's length away but felt so, so far.

I tried to reach for it, but my arms flopped around like the bones and muscles had been removed.

So tired. I just wanted to sleep. I felt like a coma.

The Mr. was still sleeping and I still didn't have the strength to shake him awake.

As a person living with chronic health conditions, it isn't hard to remember how life can really be. How short things are, how quickly time flies, and just how important the little things need to be. With the way humanity is, it's easy to let that all pass by without even considering the bigger picture.

So I try my hardest to count the smallest things. The simple joys in life. The blessed moments. The things that make you smile and nod. Even when things seem truly dark, the tiniest moment can change the whole perspective. A slight reminder that life is short, that time is to be cherished, and that you can never have enough fun.

Today, I feel like giving thanks. I was down on Wednesday...just feeling the weight of all my stress. My burden was heavy. But two days of the small things...and I'm lighter and happier.

The most recent heat wave may have passed, but summer is still in full swing -- which means heat-related health alerts. While these issues are not directly related to diabetes, diabetes can confound a heat-related health issue, making it harder to recognize and treat. Heat-related symptoms can mimic sugar-related symptoms and vice-versa, so it is in our best interests to know our normal ranges and reactions to the greatest degree possible.

The most basic heat issue is hydration. For some of us, dehydration will cause our blood glucose levels to drop; for others, it will cause those readings to rise. For some of us, the physical stress of dehydration will, at one point or another, trigger an adrenaline response and its associated glycogen release, leading to u-shaped curves (think "Dawn Phenomenon").

Every year, I thoroughly enjoy the month of November. It's absolutely my favorite month of the year. The weather is generally perfect as the leaves begin to change here in Texas, the mornings get frosty, and the afternoon highs are ideal. My birthday happens this month. Thanksgiving, football, and general fall fun. Plus, November is when the diabetes community gets wild and joins together to do things like the Big Blue Test, World Diabetes Day, and now T1 Day.

This year, I'm not sure how I feel about Diabetes Awareness Month though. I'm excited for my birthday and the weather and all the other happenings. But diabetes has been extremely difficult for me lately. In an emotional, awareness kind of way. As well as the numbers kind of way.

This weekend was a busy one. Typically we are busy folk. It seems there is always an event, party, meeting, or whatnot to attend. This weekend was no different.
I had a happy and successful start to Saturday with a loss on the old Weight Watchers scale. The weather was perfect which was both bitter and sweet since most of the country is having horrible weather. But living in Southern California has its definite pluses and minuses. The next stop was a friends Baby Shower in which all the guys were going to hang out at the house with the dad-to-be as the gals had the shower somewhere else. (READ MORE)

We went to Stonington, CT this past weekend, to visit my aunt who was here visiting from Spain. It was a glorious weekend - the house was right on the water and the weather was beautiful and it was fantastic to see relatives that I rarely see.

But Olivia's blood sugars dropped like a rock and just stayed there all weekend. She went from being high, high, high to low, low, low and with little appreciable difference in her activity or food intake. The weather wasn't hot, she wasn't swimming as much as splashing in the shallows with the little girls and yet we had a hard time keeping her blood sugars above 80.

She's been better about putting her blood sugars into her pump, although if I slack off at all about reminding her, she slacks off about entering them. I've put reminders into my phone about it, but if I don't have my phone next to me at all times, I sometimes forget too.

Many hot-weather health issues center around proper hydration. My last post discussed how much water we should be drinking, and whether or not fluids other than water counted towards that volume. I finished up by mentioning that in addition to the amount we consume, we need to take into account how quickly we process those fluids, and what should (or should not) be in the fluids we are taking to maintain proper hydration.
