When I first moved away for college back in early 2007, my health was really at its worst. We still had no idea what was going on with me...just a list of symptoms and doctors who couldn't tell me what was wrong. So I moved out on my own into a 1 bedroom apartment a little over an hour from my mom's house and less than an hour from my dad's house.
The first semester was extremely rough. I had several breakdowns on my bathroom floor, several moments of desperation, several calls home that left my parents worried. I tried to stay on top of things, but the stress made it nearly impossible.

You are the night
You are the days
You are the hours until
You are the pain on his face
You are his pinching eyelids
You are his grinding teeth
You are the screaming
You are the 2 am light bulb
You are the creaky stairs
You are deception
You are doubt
You are the things that go wrong
You are runaway hands tucked under his pillow
You are the holes in his wet fingers like coral
You are panic
You are fury
You are desperation
You are paleness
You are the vacant collapse
You are the burning tremble
You are the shark in the fog
You are the dark hallway
You are the unknown
You are unanswerable questions
You are the odd imposter
You are jagged temper
You are dread
You are scar tissue and blood
You are alarm
You are guilt
You are darkening shades of purple (READ MORE)

I sat on the bathroom floor. A world of cold, white surrounded me. My hands gripped the edge of the toilet. My stomach turned. My body ached. Chills ripped through me. I moved closer to the toilet and he stood a little closer behind me. Standing, ready and waiting. To hold my hair back. To do whatever I needed him to do.
This is what dating looks like. A pinpoint moment in an array of events. The responsibility of caring. The desperation of having chronic health issues. The pain of having your body so enveloped by its own detrimental mechanisms.
Wednesday, I found out some bad news. I didn't want to be alone. So I called the guy I'm seeing (recall, we call him Marvin for no good reason). Marvin told me to come over and greeted me with a hug. Just the kind of thing a broken heart needs.

Scanning the aisles of the grocery store, I was looking for something brownie-ish. As usual, I was assaulted by the donut counter as soon as I walked in the door (location, location, location!). But with no chocolate cake donuts with chocolate icing, it was easy for me to walk past. I quickly perused the bakery area for something tantalizing, and was actually pleased that nothing struck my fancy.
I have learned lately that when I have a craving I have to be very specific with myself or I wind up eating more that I bargained for because I'm not satisfied. So I can't go after something that's "just chocolate." I have to consider texture, temperature and portion size. (READ MORE)

I am still happy about my day of successful blood sugars yesterday. However, it would turn out, to not quite be the flawless day that I had hoped for. Last night, after I finished writing my Blogabetes entry, I decided that it would feel good to get out of the house and reward myself with a beer. So, I met a friend of mine at one of the bars here in Columbia. After arriving, I checked my sugar, and my meter read 156. I was ok with that. I knew that I would probably just have one beer, since I hardly ever drink anymore. So I thought to myself, "ok, if I have one beer, then I will be ok, because beer doesn't have very many carbs". Well, after hanging out for a while, one beer turned into two.
You can probably relate to that... if your over 21 of course. ;) (READ MORE)

Brynn and I had a great laugh, or at least she did, this afternoon. Maybe you or your significant other can relate to this, but sometimes, when the blood sugar is low, MANNERS GO OUT THE WINDOW!

It was mid-afternoon as I strolled into the local pharmacy. I needed more Novolog insulin pens and today's trip would prove itself as unsmooth as usual. The diabetic smack in the face did not come for me, however, but for the slightly unsorted diabetic fellow ahead of me.
This day's pharmaceutical quest was not stunted by the feared insurance decline, or the "too early" for a refill drama. Not even the "out of stock" song from the pharmacy tech, or wrong sized needles being slid over the counter. It was simply an, "I'm sorry, I can't help you" interaction.
Unsorted Diabetic: What do you mean I can't refill my syringes here?
Pharmacy Tech: I'm sorry. I have no record of you as an approved customer.
Unsorted Diabetic: I don't usually get my refills here. I was just in the area.
Pharmacy Tech: Some muffled explanation and seemingly helpful recourse. (READ MORE)

Weight: 210
Fasting: 95.
I ate a lot today. I'm dealing with tons of financial stress and a potential life change, which, of course, adds stress. When I'm stressed, I eat. That's not entirely true. I like to eat. I eat all the time. I wish I didn't.
This evening, I am finally able to start Byetta. Just like the nurse told me in my endo's office, I prime the Byetta pen by "wasting" one dose. Even though I don't like using the shorter pen needles, I decide to give it a go since that's what came with the Byetta starter kit. I pinch the skin on my tummy and squeeze in the medicine.
