2007 is behind us now. It blurred by and stamped in key moments that will surely be remembered. My past year with diabetes stacks upon only a few others since I was diagnosed. 2008 will mark four years since that day in the hospital and it seems like I'm always learning something new. This convention is about bringing together people affected by diabetes. Key speakers come from all corners of life and locale, sharing their knowledge on relevant topics. On convention day, Dr. Steve Edelman, founder and director of Taking Control Of Your Diabetes (TCOYD), lead the way into a successful conference on all things diabetes. This year’s JDRF annual conference has asked those involved with JDRF to compose a “Commitment to a Cure” piece. They will be using these commitment items to display on the Commitment Wall in hopes of increasing interest, passion and the volume of responses at the conference.

Congratulations to Halle Berry on the birth of her healthy baby girl on Sunday! The height and weight were not divulged, so let's all hope the baby doesn't suffer from macrosomia, a common complication for women with diabetes. Regardless of Halle's ignorance about her diabetes, the healthy arrival of a baby is ALWAYS news to celebrate!
A conference this week in Washington is focusing on the subtypes of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. At least 16 different genes can impact type 2 cases, and 14 genes can be involved in type 1. One of the goals of the conference is to increase awareness of the many possible forms of the disease beyond type 1 and type 2. (READ MORE)

The theme for this week is "Manage Your Healthcare Team".  For me, and for many others with Type 2 diabetes, this is a laugh. Team? What team? I have a primary care physician who handles everything from soup to nuts, including my diabetes care. She'll refer me to specialists and labs as needed, but she doesn't have any direct correspondence with my ophthalmologist (for whose checkup I am long overdue), and I've never had a CDE or an endo.

Last weekend I joined many other computer and radio hobbyists at the Trenton Computer Festival for two days of talks, workshops, and parts-vendors. While I was not on the program this year, I found a number of interesting presentations offered, and I spent much of the weekend attending talks. Two of the themes explored were security and privacy, and communicating with nontraditional devices wirelessly using Internet protocols.

Several of the posts coming back from the Children With Diabetes annual Friends for Life conference (FFL) have likened this gathering of beta-less buddies to a traveling circus, a family reunion, and the sitcom Cheers, in whose eponymous bar "everybody knows your name" -- except that in the case of FFL, "everybody knows what it's like to live with type 1 diabetes". The effect, even without the Disneyification (FFL is always held at Disney World), is a Magic Kingdom of Diabetes. It makes sense: the event promoters are (and need to be) familiar with the condition, and the property managers need to be aware of -- and capable of handling -- a large, temporary influx of people who all have the same, or similar, "special needs". One of the advantages of modern technology is the ability to view remote events live; another is to discuss a presentation, while it is being presented, "in the back channel" — i.e., in a chat room or on Twitter. These technologies give many of us who could not otherwise attend a technical presentation the opportunity to attend virtually, and to participate. This past week has been chock full of such opportunities.

The Type 1 Now conference put on by JDRF Austin was action packed. It lasted from 9am until almost 5pm and covered a multitude of topics that fit a wide range of type 1 diabetics. From a research piece by JDRF's Aaron Kowalski to workshops to general fellowship amongst "our own," JDRF Austin hit all the high points.

 

After 19 years of type 1 and a lot of time spent "in the industry" (through work, volunteerism, and social media), I'm always surprised when I learn something new. Not the kind of new where I discover a different way to take my Lantus (split the dose?), but the nerdy scientific kind of new about how my body is working (or not).

 

But I actually learned several new things at the conference that I'm happy to both put into practice and see out over the next few years.
