Patti LaBelle is on the TV singing about how a certain glucose monitor changed everything. "Back then, food was the enemy," she says. My mind flashes to a host of studies I've come across recently touting different foods as the "cure." I can't help but see the humor in it.
We all know diabetes and food are so closely linked that often it's hard to deal with daily diabetic life without feeling like you have a major eating disorder. And while these new studies shouldn't give anyone a license to eat with abandon, it's nice to see research money being spent investigating food and nutrition, instead of new drugs.

Brynn and I had a great laugh, or at least she did, this afternoon. Maybe you or your significant other can relate to this, but sometimes, when the blood sugar is low, MANNERS GO OUT THE WINDOW!

In addition to the normal things I worry about (I worry. A lot.), like, did I remember to feed the dog and did I mail the cable bill, I worry about my kids. Why does The Bug only have three teeth, still, when she's a year old? Is she going to be the only toothless kindergartner? Will Boo ever learn to say chocolate properly? (Don't follow that link unless you have a sense of humour.) Did I get everything on Olivia's back to school list? Is my son going to have that horrendous beard for the rest of his life? (Seriously. It's hideous. It's like pubic hair. Nasty.) But now I'm worrying incessantly about Isobel.

Maybe it's a fluke, maybe it's a urinary tract infection. Maybe she's just not peeing enough during the day and it's all coming out at night. Maybe maybe maybe.

If I could do one thing the next 3 weeks, it would be a vacation from my type 2 diabetes, weight issues and actually, my health entirely. Even one day seems like it would be divine.
Warning - "food fantasies" follow.
I would eat pastries for breakfast, and have another one or two for a morning coffee break (I do love me some carbs). Perhaps a nice Eggs Benedict. And oh, yes, I would have pumpkin spice lattes until I shook from the caffiene.
I would eat homemade cream of mushroom soup for lunch, or a nice lobster bisque, full of heavy cream. Then I would take a nap, just because I wanted one, not because my blood glucose was at 200.
Homemade cookies with full-sugar cocoa and lots of marshmallows for afternoon snack. (READ MORE)

I had already eaten probably four or five bites before he noticed what I was doing. I acted innocent, but my husband looked at me disappointedly. It was the first time in our nine years of marriage, I think, that he had looked at me that way.
"That's your second one tonight," he said referring to my enormous ice cream cookie sandwich. I guess I didn't think he was paying attention. Or, maybe I wanted him to notice.
It wasn't even what I had wanted. When I went to the store, I was after something chocolate (naturally); preferably chocolate cake with chocolate icing. But I had made a new rule for myself: if I was going to buy something bad, it had to be gone that day. So buying a chocolate cake was out. Even though one of the bakeries in town carries a smallish, individualized chocolate cake that hits the spot, I didn't go that route for some reason.

When the phone rang, I had just finished yelling and screaming at my computer. It was shaping up to be one of "those" afternoons.
"Hey, what's up," my husband wanted to know.
"If I had any chocolate I'd be eating it right now!" I said between my clenched teeth.
"Oh, really?" he said, knowing what my dependence on chocolate during stressful times amounted to.
From the office next to mine, I could hear my co-worker say "There's chocolate in the fridge!"
"Actually," I said rather proudly to my husband, "I don't have an appetite right now, so even if I did have chocolate I wouldn't be eating it." Starting my second month of Byetta was starting to pay off in the appetite-suppressant area.

Scanning the aisles of the grocery store, I was looking for something brownie-ish. As usual, I was assaulted by the donut counter as soon as I walked in the door (location, location, location!). But with no chocolate cake donuts with chocolate icing, it was easy for me to walk past. I quickly perused the bakery area for something tantalizing, and was actually pleased that nothing struck my fancy.
I have learned lately that when I have a craving I have to be very specific with myself or I wind up eating more that I bargained for because I'm not satisfied. So I can't go after something that's "just chocolate." I have to consider texture, temperature and portion size. (READ MORE)

When it comes to following a healthy meal plan, I usually do pretty well in my own kitchen. It helps that I was diagnosed with diabetes long before I met my husband and he understands my many food quirks. Basically, anything tempting is simply not allowed to enter the house, and if it does, it needs to be under the cloak of darkness.
From time to time, however, a forbidden treat manages to sneak in. A platter of jumbo chocolate chip cookies, a bag of dark chocolate truffles, the defrosted top tier of our wedding cake-all dangerous delights that have found their way into my kitchen in the last few weeks. (READ MORE)

Diabetes shows up in the most awful places. Take yesterday for example.
A little background first. Saturday night I was two hours away from home with my kids celebrating Hanukkah with old family friends. The Mr. was on call, so he stayed home. As we were preparing to leave and head to my parents' condo, No. 3 fell down a flight of stairs. No one saw her go, but No. 2 saw her at the bottom of the stairs. Actually, No. 2 saw No. 3's light-up shoes at the bottom of the stairs. This was a full flight of 10 to 12 stairs from a first floor to a basement. (READ MORE)
