Patti LaBelle is on the TV singing about how a certain glucose monitor changed everything. "Back then, food was the enemy," she says. My mind flashes to a host of studies I've come across recently touting different foods as the "cure." I can't help but see the humor in it.
We all know diabetes and food are so closely linked that often it's hard to deal with daily diabetic life without feeling like you have a major eating disorder. And while these new studies shouldn't give anyone a license to eat with abandon, it's nice to see research money being spent investigating food and nutrition, instead of new drugs.

Which would you like to hear first? I guess I'll start with the bad news and get my whining out of the way first. The scale is up this week. Granted it's only half a pound, but the frustrating part is I have been working so hard at this. I've been following Weight Watchers faithfully since Thanksgiving and I've only lost about 2 and a half pounds. What's worse is I'm starting to begrudge people at the meeting who lose more than that each week. Selfish, isn't it?
In reviewing my diet, exercise and lifestyle, I'm even more annoyed because I'm eating less food (and healthier food, at that), exercising more, drinking water and even getting more sleep than I had been. But I'm still not losing. What do I need to do? I'm open to all suggestions, except "be patient." I don't do well with patience. (READ MORE)

An interesting study came out recently. You can read about it here on dLife. In a nutshell, it says that sodas containing high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) have high levels of a reactive compound that has been shown by others to have the potential to cause damage that may lead to diabetes. A very interesting aside is that one of the active compounds in green tea, EGCG, reduces those compounds substantially.
This really piqued my interest because I began to question HFCS a year or more ago due to some reading I'd done. Much like trans-fats, this stuff looks ok because it's based on real foods. It sounds innocuous - after all fructose is the sugar in fruit, right? And corn/maize is the original all-American food. BUT, and it's a big but, it is chemically altered. It's not like you can buy a bushel of corn on the cob and cook some HFCS up in your kitchen. (READ MORE)

I like to stay on the pulse of diabetes-related news. I want to know the results of the latest clinical trials taking place and I'm interested in learning about the newest technologies. If oxygen or polyester or garden gnomes are now harmful to diabetics, I'd like to be the first to know.

 

I also have two other children without diabetes and I'd like to keep it that way. So, I seek guidance in the many diabetes headlines that are published each day. Let's take a peek at this week's breaking diabetes news headlines.

One of the more heated discussions going through the diabetes online community is whether or not type 1 diabetes should be renamed to avoid it being lumped in with the public perception of type 2 diabetes. "Don't blame me because my pancreas decided to crap out on me!" is the rallying call -- implying, rightly or wrongly, that type 2 diabetes is always caused by the person with diabetes, through a combination of poor diet choices and poor lifestyle choices. Many people with type 2 diabetes -- particularly the young, fit, and not-obese -- also take issue with that perception.

The magazine I work for is not for health-care professionals. It’s not even close to being something read by health-care professionals. Yet the audience deals with health-care and insurance issues on a regular basis. So for me to read and edit a story about wellness or diseases is not uncommon.
 

I have become quite defensive of the truths about diabetes and of making sure people understand the differences between type 1 and type 2. As someone who was originally diagnosed with type 2 and who lived with that label for three years I know the blame that can be placed on the victim.

At some time during our diabetic self-discovery, we are told that diabetes -- like most chronic illnesses -- is often accompanied by a second "D": depression. Considering the amount of time we need to put into consideration of our diets, exercise, drugs, and doctor visits -- and how much that takes out of what would otherwise be disposable income -- it's hardly surprising. Nor should it come to anyone's surprise that this level of attention to detail often smacks of another mental-health issue: obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD. It is considered "normal" -- even encouraged -- for people with diabetes to arrange our lives around our blood glucose levels, logging every single reading, every single milligram of metformin or subunit of insulin, weighing and logging every single morsel of food or fluid that passes our lips, every step of exercise, every moment of every day of our lives. I am not a number. -- "Number 6", The Prisoner

 

One of the questions asked in a recent #dsma chat had to do with the people we live and work with who are familiar enough with our diabetes care to support us, make sure we have appropriate food and drink as needed, who know how and when to administer glucagon, and what to tell the folk at 911 about us. Some debate arose over the common patient-community designation of these individuals as "Type 3s".

There's an old joke about two blind men who, having never before encountered an elephant, are asked to describe it based on what they can touch of it. The one man, brought to the elephant's trunk, has a completely different description from the other, who was brought to its hind leg.

 

There's a famous experiment, proposed as a test for artificial intelligence, in which a person queries two entities about themselves and tries to determine which of the two is a man, and which is a machine.

 

And then there's the famous "black box" which, in theory, creates solutions from inputs, without any single entity knowing what it does to "create order from chaos". The black box is, in other words, magick.

 

Each of these requires that someone (or some thing) create a definition and a solution to a problem based on insufficient, empirical data.
