I don't know a lot about the Canadian universal health care. What I have learned has been in dribs and drabs, culled from friends and from the few Canadian posters to the Children With Diabetes parents email list. I knew it varied from province to province but assumed that most diabetes supplies were covered.

 

And then I read this post by Andrea, over at A Garden of Na Mmoy. She has type 1 diabetes, although she doesn't post about it very often. She has a few other posts about diabetes and she's an eloquent writer no matter what the subject - you should check her out regardless. But that post really opened my eyes to the limits that any insurance, universal or private, puts on our health.

I got an email from my boss here at dLife yesterday. (Hi, boss!) In it, she suggested maybe I give a rundown of who's who in my cast of characters.

Since I'm not quite self-absorbed enough to think that everyone already knows me, I thought I'd comply with her reasonable request. She's quite reasonable, actually, my boss. And funny. And heck, any woman who loves Eddie Izzard with the same burning fire that I do has got to have a few other redeeming qualities, right? (And if you don't know who Eddie Izzard is, get thee to Mr. Google. He's hysterical. Only don't listen at work. The man does like to swear.)

Sorry. Tangets. Another thing I'm good at, scooting down that tangent slide.

Sometimes I feel like the Grocery gods have it in for me. I go to the store, armed with a list and a meal planned out in my head, only to find they're out of key ingredients. Like the time I had my pregnant heart set on faux-tatoes only to discover they're out of cauliflower. Or when I had to have a pizza and they were out of whole wheat Boboli crusts. And it seems like every other trip they are entirely sold out of my brand of diet root beer.
So it should come as no shock that the day I decide to make a stockpile of black bean soup the store is completely out of black beans. They had every other bean imaginable: kidneys, pintos, canelli, garbanzo, small pink and navy. But no black beans. (READ MORE)

It may be strange or alarming, but I've often imagined being kidnapped. I watch a lot of TV crime dramas, so the thoughts tend to race through my head. I imagine my reaction as a human, as a woman, and as a diabetic.

 

As a human, I know that I'm not giving up without a fight. My life is precious and valuable, whether someone else sees that or not. I would try every plan to escape or leave every clue to allow the police to do their jobs quickly and efficiently.

 

As a woman, the same truths apply. I'm not giving up without a fight. I refuse to give in to whatever threats unless I've tried my hardest to get away or delay the action.
