I came across this article recently from the BD Newsletter and it got me thinking about how Olivia behaves when her blood sugar is high.

Normally, she's your average teen-ager. She's sometimes sullen, sometimes goofy, sometimes talkative, all in a five minute span. But when her blood sugar is high, she can become weepy, rude, argumentative and very, very unpleasant. The really high highs make her feel sick, but it's the somewhat high highs that I loathe.

Olivia moved her site to her belly and her numbers have been much better. So thighs are definitely out.

 

We talked about it the other night - she's sick of using her belly. It looks awful, full of bumps and keloids and just generally mangled. I'm going to call her CDE at Joslin to see if we can start using her arms again. We're also going to start moving her sites out more towards her sides, in an effort to get around to her backside. Not her butt, because she says that really hurts, especially when she's sleeping, but in that area above the belt, where she still has some padding.

Per usual, I'm tardy.
Resolution #1 in the New Year: I shall try to be more timely.
Actually, I'm not making any resolutions this year. I think I've turned a corner in terms of resolving to lose weight, exercise, eat right, and relax - then not doing any of it. The difference for me in 2007 was that I promised to do nothing - and I did most of the things I would have promised to do if I'd made resolutions.
Go figure.
At the close of December, the year found me down 30 lbs, exercising more and with more vigor than I have since my teens, eating right and enjoying it, in a new - more satisfying - job, getting paid to write (how exciting!). Numbers-wise, I finished the year with an average A1C of 5.7% and my cholesterol levels much lower. (READ MORE)

Elizabeth commented on yesterday's Pump Nostalgia post, saying she has been type 1 for 38 years and has in the past resisted the idea of going on a pump. She wants to know what I find so thrilling about it.


For starters, and probably the biggest things for me, it's the precision and the convenience. As for precision there are a couple of aspects: I don't have to conform to a certain number of carbs to match my insulin:carb ratio. For example, like many people, I am more insulin resistant in the morning, so my insulin:carb ratio is lower. So if I'm having 45 carbs and my insulin:carb ratio is 1:12 and my sugar is within target, I can't take 3.75 units with an insulin pen. So I either have to decrease or increase the number of carbs or the amount of insulin and deal with the consequences later.

In googling my doctor the other day, I came across a website that lets you rate your doctors and leave specific comments. In reading my doctor's reviews, I had to laugh. Many were spot on. His punctuality rating was far below par. On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best, he averaged a measly 1.5 for punctuality. His staff also got very low ratings for helpfulness. If he wasn't such a great doctor, I doubt he'd be able to stay in business.
The primary complaint was the wait and his reputation in that department preceeds him. When I asked my primary care physician for a referal to see him, she laughed and told me to bring a good book, because I'd be waiting for quite some time. And it's true. A three-hour wait is standard, and that's just in the waiting room. Once you get into the back office, its usually another hour. (READ MORE)

About most things in my life, I'm pretty systematic: I wash the same body parts in the same order in the shower each morning, can't test my sugar without first wiping my finger with an alcohol swab, take the same route to work, ad nauseum.

 

I've learned to be fairly stingy with pump supplies, too. Especially since I'm in a probation period with my employer (everyone is subject to it their first 90 days on the job, so don't think I'm a slacker and they singled me out!) and don't have benefits until Sept. 1.

 

I knew this going into the job and prepared accordingly: got sample bottles of insulin from everyone who would give it up in addition to getting a mail order prescription for three months, reordering testing and pump supplies and asking for a little extra just in case.

This is all over the diabetes online community and may have already been posted about on here, but I'm going to chime in with my 2 cents.

Have you heard? Halle Berry has managed to cure herself of type 1 diabetes and has beaten it down to type 2 and doesn't need insulin any more.

Isn't that a neat trick?

Perez Hilton even has something on it. You know the diabetes online community is really up in arms if it's being reported on Perez Hilton!

It's been talked almost to death, but I don't understand what Halle Berry's problem is with having diabetes. If she has type 1, is she ashamed of that? If it's type 2, shouldn't she be out there saying "Look! It's not a fat disease! Thin people who eat well and exercise a lot can also get type 2!

A coworker asked me if I knew of a cake mix that was sugar free. She was asked to bake a cake for a friend who has diabetes.

 

That began the carbohydrate lesson.

 

"The thing is, although something may say 'Sugar Free' or 'Reduced Sugar' it may still have carbs in it which is what effects blood sugar. Sugar is included in that number." I did my best to not get too technical.

 

"Well I bought this one to try but I thought I would check with you to see if you knew of a better one," she said.

As everyone knows by now, my blood sugars have been elevated lately. Since about last Tuesday, my averages suddenly shot up into the 200s when usually I average 140s. All last week I was scared to make any changes just because I couldn't figure out why I was running so high. It's always my luck the day I increase basals that my blood sugars will drop back down and I'll end up with horrible lows. So I just kept blousing and tried to really watch what I ate to keep my levels down. Nothing worked. (READ MORE)
