I had a very nice time this weekend sweating it out at the sweat lodge. I had a few concerns that were diabetes related, but in the end everything went very well and I learned a lot. I arrived at the location where the sweat would take place feeling prepared for an event I had no way of knowing how to prepare. The experience will never be forgotten and one that I will always be proud of. Ultimately the lesson I was reminded of this weekend is that you should never let diabetes stop you from trying anything that you want to do no matter what anybody else says and that preparation is always key to a good time.

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen,

Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen.

But do you recall, the most pancreatically-challenged reindeer of all?

Rudolph the diabetic ('betic)

Had some very nasty lows (like a 30)

And if you ever asked him (asked him)

He would even say it blows (like a mofo)

All of the other reindeer (reindeer)

Used to laugh and call him names (like Sugar Boy)

They said he was contagious

They didn't want to be the same (the same)

Then one foggy Christmas Eve

Santa came to say (ho ho ho)

Back on November 14th was World Diabetes Day. I really wanted to do something special to mark the day this year. I decided I would write a song and record myself playing it to try and raise some awareness.

On my drive home from work on Thursday the 13th I started humming a tune that I thought would work. I knew I wanted the song to be my personal feelings about my disease and I wanted it to be empowering.

Diabetes,

Hey. Perhaps I was a little harsh the other day when I called for divorce. That's not to say I want to keep you around. Don't get me wrong. I desperately want you out of my house. I still hate you very much and harbor a great amount of resentment toward you.

But, that said, today you were absolutely dreamy. You had me at 97. I am all too aware that you could have very easily pissed all over my fishing trip with Charlie with the snap of your evil tentacles. But you didn't.  I hardly even thought of you today.  Thank you for making yourself scarce; for not being the center of attention; for giving me some quality time with my son. Maybe you had "gone fishin'" too.

"You inspire me.  I believe, seeing you, that my daughter will become all she wants to be and more.  That makes all the difference in living with this thing day in and out."  Those lines are an excerpt from an email I received recently from a mom with a nine year old daughter living with diabetes.

And that's the awesome part of having diabetes.

Because I have lived with this disease for almost thirty years.  Because I am (knock on wood for me, please) virtually complication free.  Because I live a fun, full, busy life.  Because I am successful.  Because I am strong.  Because I never shy away from a challenge.

Things are better today. I appreciated the comments I got on my “What the F?” post. I agree, yeah sometimes I do probably think things to death. And yes, we all have “those days” from time to time- diabetes or no diabetes. Like I said, writing those posts in my “diary” (blog) made me feel much better. I said that it was good to see my diary again … and I meant it.

I also meant what I said about my martial arts and my health and being thankful for having the physical abilities that I am graced with. I try and maintain that positive outlook all the time.

With that being said and put aside for the time being, I would like to talk about a few other things today. I would really like to hear from you guys. If you don’t have the ability to comment, you should really see about becoming a member of dlife. We would love to have you contribute your two cents in the comment section below. (READ MORE)

We resume our story as The Grinch decides he will put a stop to Christmas. Enjoy.

Then he got an idea!

An awful idea!

The Grinch got a wonderful, awful idea

"I know just what to do!" The Grinch laughed in his throat

And he made a quick Santy Claus hat and a coat

Beneath his lapel was a very slight bump

Where he secretly hid his insulin pump

And he chuckled, and clucked, "What a great Grinchy trick!

"With this coat and this hat, I'll look just like Saint Nick!"

He loaded some bags and some old empty sacks

On a ramshakle sleigh and he hitched up old Max

Charlie sat on the bench in a somewhat meditative state. Even the blank expression on his face seemed by design to be a strategy in which to conserve energy. If he blinked his eyes less frequently and stayed perfectly still, perhaps his blood sugar would remain above 100.

"Charlie, you can skate a little bit before hockey starts," I said. "You’ve got about 10 minutes."

"Neh," Charlie said calmly and without emotion. "I really don’t want to go low this time."

Who can blame him after last week’s debacle.

It's not often that Susanne and I get out.  It's hard to do so with three kids; even harder when one of ‘em has type 1 diabetes. When we do go out, it's usually to see one of our favorite bands playing in Philadelphia. We love music.

We were very excited to have tickets to see one of our favorite musicians - Matt Pond.  The weather was great. I was coming home early from work. We'd head into the city a little early - find a place where I could eat and Susanne could watch me eat with mad envy as she slurped her chalky nutrition shake ... It would be perfect!

The other night I had a breakdown.

I needed to wear a nice shirt for work and none of them fit. I threw most of my clothes in the trash and was very upset about how fat I've become.

I have a closet full of clothes that I have outgrown. I have gained all the weight I lost and a lot more!

This is the fattest I've ever been.

But tonight, I am celebrating what I am calling, "My Fattest Night Ever!"

I have decided that tomorrow will be the beginning of the new me. The me that will never ever be this fat again. Someone who makes wiser choices and who tries to find little ways to change so it's not overwhelming.
