As a person with diabetes, I find myself constantly informing others.
As a person with diabetes, who also has a 90-year-old grandmother with type 2 diabetes, I find that I am a springboard for "real world" information for my mom and aunts who have to sift through what Bami's doctors tell them, what they hear on the news and what they read. It wasn't long after the oral diabetes drug Avandia made headlines in regard to worsening heart conditions that I got calls and emails from Mom and my two aunts. Bami has a history of heart trouble (runs in the family) and had a severe heart attack roughly 20 years ago. They wanted to know if she should stay on the drug. (READ MORE)

I modified a recipe from the Hungry Girl website for a low sugar eggnog and found it very acceptable. It has nearly the same taste and mouth feel as the lite eggnog I've been drinking. It may be a bit late for this year's holiday season, but there's still New Year's.
The original recipe is here. My version is below.
Low Sugar Eggnog

6 C 1% milk 1 Tbsp vanilla extract 1 small (4-serving) package Jell-O Sugar Free Fat Free Instant Pudding mix, Vanilla 6 no-calorie sweetener packets (like Splenda) 1 tsp Mace (or nutmeg) (optional) 6 oz dark rum or 1 tsp rum extract (READ MORE)

Diabetes shows up in the most awful places. Take yesterday for example.
A little background first. Saturday night I was two hours away from home with my kids celebrating Hanukkah with old family friends. The Mr. was on call, so he stayed home. As we were preparing to leave and head to my parents' condo, No. 3 fell down a flight of stairs. No one saw her go, but No. 2 saw her at the bottom of the stairs. Actually, No. 2 saw No. 3's light-up shoes at the bottom of the stairs. This was a full flight of 10 to 12 stairs from a first floor to a basement. (READ MORE)

I don't like to post "downers" on Blogabetes unless I can turn them into cautionary morals, or calls to action (either on our own behalf, or on the behalf of all people with diabetes) -- most of us have too much negativity in our lives already. That said, life has been throwing me the sorts of curve balls that force me to think more of survival, mortality, and quality of life than I am comfortable dealing with.

Someone asked me a few weeks ago how my type 2 diagnosis affected my family. Honestly, I said, not very much. And I'm not sure if that's good or bad or a mix of both.
For one thing, I've always been the meal planner, grocery shopper, chef and chief bottle washer in our family. Furthermore, I always cooked fairly healthy for my family, tried to get a good mix of meats, veggies, starches and fruits. So adjusting our meal plan really didn't take much effort. (I know, you're wondering how I got to be so overweight if I cooked so healthy. Sweets have always been a big part of my life. The weight comes from not sharing, essentially. And I like to eat. My job will be ending sometime this summer. Consequently, I am investigating our health insurance options. Since hubby is self-employed, we have always covered the family under my work policy.

 

Now, I know that "health care in this country is in crisis"!  I know this is a huge touchpoint for political candidates.  Yes, I know all this intellectually. 

 

Now it's PERSONAL.  COBRA, offered by my employer by federal mandate, is more than a house note EVERY month.  Private insurance is still pricey - more than what we paid on 2 car notes.  And it carries a $2000 deductible per person.  Some sloppy math later and it could be $15,000 a year before they pay any expenses for us.
