Congratulations! The first all-female team and the first person with type 1 diabetes to win the Amazing Race. My 8-year-old son Charlie, who has diabetes, thinks you're pretty cool. Or was it cool and pretty. Something like that.

Thank you so much! Having type 1 diabetes, I was just happy to finish the race. Winning it and being the first female team to win it was the icing on the cake.

"Exercise is key to lifetime management of type 2 diabetes".  How many times have we heard that or a variation of that statement?  dLife even has a whole section devoted to the topic.

I started picking up the exercise habit last summer, when I was laid off by my employer.  But I tried to get the habit for many years prior to that event.  If I only had exercised for all the months that I paid for gym memberships, I might not be writing first hand about type 2 diabetes!

It was a diabetes on TV sort of weekend. Did you guys see that one of the contestants on The Amazing Race has type 1 diabetes? She and her teammate are doctors from Arizona. She was shown testing her blood sugar in the car while in the thick of the race. She was 332, I think. I would think the adrenalin of a race around the world would wreak havoc on her blood sugars. Should be interesting to see how she adjusts to that and how much of the diabetes-related footage the producers decide to show.

There's a lot about diabetes that isn't so happy. Really, 98% isn't. But to me, there are things about this disease that top the list of the worst parts of diabetes. The biggest thing is the utterly hopeless need for insulin.

I can't hide the facts from myself like I can when I think about complications or discrimination. I can tell myself that better control will lower my risk of complications, that they might not happen to me. I can believe that employers, lovers, and friends won't judge me on my diabetes. Those are things that always leave glimmers of hope in my heart; they aren't finite.

My mind is currently in a million places at the moment. I'm in the middle of a tough decision and waiting game. I'm slightly stressed. And I'm closely watching how my Lantus change is affecting my numbers. So I'm going to take the easy way out and bullet point what's on my mind.

It may be strange or alarming, but I've often imagined being kidnapped. I watch a lot of TV crime dramas, so the thoughts tend to race through my head. I imagine my reaction as a human, as a woman, and as a diabetic.

As a human, I know that I'm not giving up without a fight. My life is precious and valuable, whether someone else sees that or not. I would try every plan to escape or leave every clue to allow the police to do their jobs quickly and efficiently.

As a woman, the same truths apply. I'm not giving up without a fight. I refuse to give in to whatever threats unless I've tried my hardest to get away or delay the action.

Charlie got happy on Saturday. Happy to the tune of 520 mg/dl.

For several reasons, if we have something fun planned for the kids, we don't divulge the news until the very last moment. This is because A. – it's really annoying to hear "is it time to go yet?" over and over again for weeks because they can't comprehend the concept of time or understand the complexities of calendars,  B. – we don't want them to be disappointed if for some reason we can't go, and 3. – it's really annoying to hear "is it time to go yet" over and over again for weeks.

When we went to Disney, we kept that secret for months. They found out we were going to Disney about three hours before our flight to Orlando was to depart.
