I've recently learned that if I want to get something accomplished, I'd better make a game out of it. Like when I wanted to try to save money on groceries, I played the
Grocery Game . And when hubby and I decided we needed to cut back on spending, we instituted No Money Mondays, where we don't spend any money on Mondays.
Now that I'm trying hard to get back on the weight-loss track, I've decided a new game is in order. I'm calling it "Five For Five." The rules are simple; I focus on five healthy habits for five days a week. For each habit I successfully accomplish each day, I earn one point. If I've earned 20 out of 25 points at the end of the round, I earn reward.

I had to laugh at the lead paragraph on
this story.
"In the first study to use continuous monitoring throughout pregnancy , researchers found that levels of glycemic control differ significantly between women with type 1 diabetes and those with type 2."
I would think that blood sugar levels between type 1 and type 2 patients always differ significantly. The nature of the different diseases make it sort of obvious. I don't know why pregnancy should be any different.
Let me throw in a disclaimer here - I am not a medical professional, I'm not even in a field related to medicine. This is my own interpretation of the article. Discuss anything you find interesting with your own doctors. You can read the
abstract here as well. (READ MORE)

I love to cook. In the spring and summer, I like to try out different salads. In the fall and winter months, my kitchen is brimming with bubbling pots of soups and stews. So today, with a dusting of snow on the ground and football on the TV, it seemed like the perfect day to make chili.
Ever since I was diagnosed with diabetes--and especially now that I'm that I'm trying to lose weight--healthy cooking has become a priority. I've learned a few tricks for keeping full on the fewest calories and carbs, like drinking lots of water, substituting a relaxing cup tea for dessert and filling up on lots of veggies.

Last week, I started a new "game" with myself. I call it
Five For Five. I focus on five healthy habits for five days, earning points as I go and working toward a reward. Each week, the points accumulate for an even bigger reward.
I'm proud to report that I earned 23 of a possible 25 points last week. My daily habits were drinking three liters of water, exercising for at least 30 minutes, doing 25 sit-ups, testing my blood sugar three out of four times and not eating any junk. I expected finding 30 minutes to exercise each day would be my biggest challenge, but it turns out that wasn't the case.
The two points I missed last week were for sit-ups. The first one, I'd gotten as far as 15 when the little boy started having a melt down next to me. I thought I'd get back to the other 10 in a little while, but the day got away from me and I forgot. Then on the last day of the game, I didn't do them at all.

Olivia has caught the crud that's currently rampaging at our house. The two babies have had hacking coughs and boogery noses for a few days now and I've been feeling pretty funky, too. Yesterday Olivia started complaining of a sore throat and today I picked her up from school early because she wasn't feeling well.
Usually when she's sick, she just spikes, but this time, she's spiking and crashing a couple of times a day. I have no clue what to do in this case. Treat the highs and lows, I guess.
At least she's able to keep stuff down. When she gets a stomach virus, she tends to throw up a lot. I'm always paranoid about that with her - we've wound up in the ER more times than I can count in order to get IV fluids into her because she can't keep anything down.
