When I look back at 2007, I realize that a lot happened and that I learned a great deal about many things. First and foremost, I am happy to say that it is another year completed and another successful year behind me in the books. To say that and to think about that feels great. Every day that goes by a person living with diabetes learns something new about their disease. I can look back and recall different situations where my blood sugar got low. I remember certain times when I checked my glucose and it was off the charts high. Everything that has happened this year will be a learning experience that I can come back to in the future. I learned about myself and how different things affect me. I can recall specific weeks where everything was hunky dory and others where I felt I was going to lose it. Just living and learning each day adds more notches to my diabetic belt, a belt that I will always have. (READ MORE)

It's finally here: Jan. 1, 2008. There's really nothing all that significant about this day. I mean, it's the start of a new year and everything, but other than a day off from work there's nothing that special about today.
Except that today marks the first day of my new insurance coverage. Which means that as soon as I receive my new insurance card, I'll be calling insulin pump companies and fielding sales calls. (READ MORE)

I have to take issue with something my new, wonderful treatment team seems to think. Dr. A said, "It really doesn't matter what type of diabetes you have as long as you have an effective treatment method." While I mostly agree with him, I have to say that a lot of people with diabetes want the distinction; we want to know the label. Because even though the treatment method may be the same, it’s still different.
Despite me rattling off a list of drugs meant for people with Type 2 that I tried and that didn't work, and telling him my c-peptide result (<0.1), Dr. A still said, "I think you are Type 2."

My pump sites have just not been cooperating lately. No matter where I put the canula - it ends up hurting. A lot. Enough so that I complain about it.
To give you an idea of what it takes for me to complain - I am a girl who has had external fixators drilled into a bone in my arm for eight weeks and who refused pain killers (other than Tylenol) after two days. I'm not a sissy. Not at all. So these sites are causing me more than a little bit of turmoil.

The Past
Looking back on 2008 from a "Charlie's diabetes" perspective, it was a pretty good year. His A1c took downward baby steps from 8.1 to 7.9 and then to 7.8 at our last endo visit in November.
In 2008, he began identifying total carbs in the snacks he ate (and soon his whole class was doing it at snack time - sorry Mrs. R), but still showed no desire to begin testing his own blood sugar. We began having him bolus himself on occasion under our supervision. He seemed to like the idea of giving himself insulin; being the one to press the buttons.

Hey, boss. I'm going to have some bloodwork done on my way in tomorrow. I should be in by 8:30. I went to do it on Friday afternoon, but my doctor's office failed to tell me I had to be fasting. Grrr.

Do you remember the diabetes-themed Hannah Montana episode last year that was leaked onto the Internet and swiftly pulled before it was aired on the Disney Channel?
Well, it’s back.
You might recall the disappointment many in the diabetes community expressed after seeing diabetes depicted inaccurately - aiding the very misconceptions we work so hard to dispel. Terms like "sugar boy," written as a weak attempt to deploy canned laughter and delivered by young actors unaware of the potential damage it could cause, did not go over well with most of us.

The poem/song Auld Lang Syne is a toast to the departing year written by Robert Burns in 1788. I think that's a lovely sentiment. In that spirit, I'd like to salute my health in 2008.
2008 was a good year as far as diabetes. My A1C is stable, and regular exercise seems to help level out the glucose rollercoaster. I weigh just 1 pound more than last New Year's. That sounds more stable than reality - up as much as 15 pounds, down as much as 10.
My endocrinologist's office switched me to six months between visits from three. It's a good sign, with most conditions, if your doctor wants to see you less. I'll be seeing them this month, as a matter of fact.

When I met with our new CPA for the first time, I brought him everything I could think he would need. In 2008 my family and I lived in two states and between me and my husband we had five jobs.
As we sat down to talk taxes, he asked the obvious, normal questions. And then the biggie: he wanted to know if I kept receipts or records from doctor's office co-pays or any other medical treatment. No, of course not, because I had no need to. Well, in Arizona, he said, you can write off your medical expenses, right down to your office co-pays.
Well, hot damn, I thought! I have tons of medical expenses!
"Co-pays, really?" I asked.
"Yes."
"Prescriptions?"
"Yes."
