Diabetic Recipes
A friend of mine, who has a son with type 1, recently gave me a couple of bottles of Novolog to tide Olivia over until we're in the system with our new health insurance. She also gave us some strips. She's a lifesaver, that woman.
Olivia had never used Novolog before. She seems to be doing fine with it, although she does say that it drops her much more quickly than Humalog did. She doesn't like that aspect of it that much - dropping quickly makes her feel kind of sick to her stomach, so I can't say that I blame her.
But she's had some highs lately, and getting them down quickly has been great. I need to make sure I don't need to adjust her sensitivity factor with this new insulin. I'm having to go thru the last couple of days of records to see just how quickly she's dropping.
If Novolog does drop her and keep her in range better, I may see about switching. I like being able to get her down from stubborn highs and she has had quite a few of those lately. Yet another thing I need to analyze.
Anyone else notice this trend with Novolog?
I use Novalog before meals in injection form, matching 15 grams of carb to one unit of Novolog. I usually get a 2 hour post meal number about 50 points lower than when I started eating. I don't feel sick, but I get some nasty lows if I'm not careful....especially after lunch when my Levemir is active too. Novolog is pretty powerful! Olivia may want to experiment with the dose a little....maybe 20:1 or something like that. I hope it helps her!

I've used Humalog for years but I got some samples of Novolog and Apidra to see if any were faster/more predictable for me. I actually saw the opposite effect when I tried Novolog just recently - I would spike for hours then crash suddenly 5 hours after a bolus. Not sure if I ended up with a bad batch or if I had a weird reaction to it. As soon as I switched back to Humalog I was right back in range. On the other hand, Apidra seemed to work a lot faster for me than Humalog. I'm going to do another round with Novolog to see if the same thing happens (AFTER my A1c test).
The 2 times that I've ever used Novolog I've become horribly ill. It's left me on the couch with horrible stomach pains, my doctor says I'm allergic to it ... I don't understand how ... from everything I've ever heard humalog and novolog are almost identical ...
I have use both of them (novolog / humalog) for sure with novolog I get a drop in my numbers more quickly than with humalog, so when I use novolog I adjust my dosis, but I dont get sick when I use it.
