From the top of a hill overlooking a baseball diamond ,

"I think I'm low."

While playing roller hockey like a Transformer with 15 pounds of equipment ,

"I think I'm low."

While blowing bubbles on the deck ,

"I think I'm low."

From the top of the stairs ,

"I think I'm low."

In the wee hours of the morning while the whole house sleeps ,

"Mom, dad, I think I'm low."

"I think I'm low."
"I think I'm low."
"I think I'm low."

Charlie must have said these four words at least 20 times over the course of the weekend. When you can play the lottery with your blood sugar numbers, there's a problem. I plan to play 34, 38, 44, 49, 52 and 55 with the hope that something good can come from this disastrous weekend.

The 34 came with a glassy look and a slight tremble as he reached his finger out to me with urgency, knowing he was in danger. I set him up on the couch with a juice box and a bag of graham cracker cookies, which exploded when he pulled the bag open too hard. I came back into the room to find him motionless with crumbs and cookie bits all over his shirt and jeans. A few minutes after he ate, he asked how he got on the couch and why there were crumbs everywhere. He had no recollection of the low. Does this happen to you when you get very low? A sudden blackout? This is new to us.

Something has gone horribly wrong and I think it's more than the increased activity that comes with Spring. Charlie's dropping very low across the board. All times of day. The time and effort we spent basal and bolus testing means nothing now. It's like Charlie has been reset like a video game. If not for the over-corrected highs, I'd say his pancreas had risen from the dead and started spitting out some insulin.

So we have reduced basal rates throughout the day, but it's hard not to feel as if diabetes is setting us up.

I feel like we are dumb and unsuspecting animals taking its bait while the cage crashes down upon us.

Normally, I remember all the lows, except sometimes, when it drops suddenly or just very low, I don't really remember. Sometimes my body will work on autopilot and get to the juice regardless. Scary stuff though.

Hang tough!

Carey,
I'm having issues with lows too. I think you are right....it's the increased activity of springtime. I'm not a kid, but yard work kicks my butt! At least I got a bowl of 'legal' ice cream after mowing the yard last night!!

Good luck!
Mousie

Hi - I am Type 1 10 years and 26 yrs old. Wow... you took the words right out of my mouth! I have had a number of times when all of the sudden it's like my pancreas is producing again! I even thought to myself... maybe I'm not Diabetic anymore. Ha! Then I wake up the next day back to the usual. I notice it has more to do with blood sugar for me or stress. Sometimes, if I am in a generally good state of mind, not for any particular reason, it will impact my sugars a lot. I would consider the environment lately, other than just the exercise. Was it a typical weekend?

Constant: Thanks. Today was better. Only one mild low.

Mousie: Sounds like one well-deserved bowl of ice cream. There's looking at the bright side.

Sarah: Hi. Really is a mystery what is going on in that little body of his. Weekend was typical.

I am totally convinced that Brendon's pancreas starts producing again and it happens in cycles. I was especially convinced after I learned about the pancreas being able to regenerate beta cells from Dr. Faustman's research. I figure it produces some and begins working before they're killed off again. Spring is when it happens. I don't know about the extra activity being the reason because Brendon is just as active during the winter as he is during the spring. It really is a mystery though. But I hold on to the conspiracy theories anyway, LOL.

welcome to my world , it could have been me writing that about my son, spring , summer , autumn or winter

Hi Carey,

I usually remember my lows, but the other morning, I asked my husband "How did you know to get me juice?". His answer? "You said 'I need juice - I'm low'".

As far as the changing of the seasons, my dad (T2) and I (T1) both notice that our insulin needs change with each season. It could have to do with activity level, or weather, or just because diabetes sometimes seems to change with the winds. I have had T1 for 21 years, so I remember going through a lot of what Charlie is going through - only, without a pump, with much worse control, and armed with much less knowledge. I follow your posts religiously, and think you're doing a great job with Charlie and with the blogs, too. Keep it up, and keep us posted. I hope you guys figure out Charlie's control again before the seasons change again!

Hey, I'm a 9 yr old type1 diabetic, and I only have those sudden blackouts when I'm like, really low. I get three different ways of knowing I'm low. I can be really tired and weak,or I can get really irritable or I can get hyper and feel like doing a backflip. Once, I was low in the middle of the night, so I did a few cartwheels on my bed. A little bit of a challenge, but of course that didn't help, it only brought me lower. Oh, and when I'm really nervous and scared, I can start to feel low. Like when I went to the 3rd Grade Spell Bowl. I had to take two sugar tablets before I went up. But back to those blackouts, I've never really forgotten anything, but I do feel dizzy and I feel like i'm spinning even when I'm standing still. That's all I can tell you. I've only had diabetes for 5 years, I haven't experienced everything yet. Sorry!
