Do you consider yourself to be selfish? That's the topic I've been pondering over today and for many years since becoming diabetic. Sometimes I can't help but feel like because of diabetes I am forced to think of myself, or my diabetic needs, before the needs of others. Maybe selfishness is a characteristic that is inherited in people who develop life threatening illnesses or diseases. Perhaps because we live with the constant reminder of the thin line between life and death, we are more in tune to our needs.

Is it true that selfishness and diabetes go hand in hand?

What do you think? Have you, like me, thought about this before? Do you think of yourself as a selfish person?

For example, I feel like I put myself and my diabetic needs and feelings, before others nine times out of ten. Can you relate to that feeling? The feeling that diabetes is constantly on your mind; it influences every decision you make therefore driving your thoughts and desires.

Maybe I'm over analyzing things a tad,

Don't get me wrong, I live for doing for others. I can't think of anything else that I would rather do, or that I derive more pleasure from, then knowing I have helped somebody. I love to see the look on people's faces or hear the joy in their voice after I've helped them.

But at the same time I also love to take care of myself.

This is a complicated issue and one that I won't resolve in just one day.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you consider yourself more selfish because of diabetes, or does it just come with the territory?

Thanks for your input. -Andy

Well, you can't really be good to others until you learn to be good to yourself. I too have pondered this and have decided that after 10 years with Type 1, I must put myself first in order to live at least another 10... This does not mean being crass with people or not pitching in. What it does mean for me is that the people in my life need to learn to be more patient. Patience is key. I may not be able to do a task that second, but I will try to see it through. This is a great topic!!

Thank you "Sarah inspired" :) I agree with "learn to be good to yourself"....I don't think that's being selfish :) Thanks again. -Andy

i feel like a selfish person sometimes like when i have to get on to my kids for drinking the last of the oj. or when i have to redo my pump and the kids are wanting me to do something with them. since i have found out that i have diabetes i have noticed the words "i have to have....." are a big part of my everyday vocabulary.

Thank you amysartin. That's what I was talking about in my blog, it sounds like you can definately relate to my feelings of selfishness sometimes. I am trying (and I try) not to think of it so much as selfishness but just as something I have to do to take care of diabetes. It's just part of it living with it...thank you for your comment. -Andy

Yes! Diabetes is constantly on my mind: (Should I test? Am I too low? Too high? How many carbs did I just eat? Do I need to bolus? Is today a good day to exercise? etc.) I believe to be healthy, I need to take care of "me first," and then I'm more able to help others.

Well said hawaiian78. Thank you for the comment. -Andy

Taking care of yourself is not selfish. Actually a diabtic diet is a good one for everyone. It's just eating smart.
