Traveling can be an awesome thing. I find that when I do travel, I pay the utmost attention to controlling my diabetes. I'm away from home, I don't want anything to happen. For me, the simple fact that I'm in an unfamiliar place without any "diabetic connections", is reason enough to watch my control closely. When traveling I start thinking about what I would do or where I might end up if I got really low. Personally, I guess that is one of the main reasons while I try and take special care of myself and my sugars while away on vacation or business.

This is the realization I came to this week as I was traveling on JDRF business.

I was in Kansas City training and working on various things and I found myself paying extra attention to my diabetic needs. First of all, when we ordered out for lunch I made sure to get something very simple. Something I knew exactly how many carbs it consisted of; I got a basic sandwich with some veggies. It was Easy. I took the simple dose I felt I needed and then tested "all good" two hours later. The same went for the rest of the day.

I took advantage of the gym the hotel had and made sure my dinner was an easy one too. As always my workout reduced the amount of insulin I would need for dinner. So when I ordered a low-carb fish and veggie meal I hardly needed any insulin at all; Greatly reducing any chance of hypoglycemia.

Travel is an example of something that people with diabetes do where it is important to take extra steps to ensure our health and safety. For me anyway, when I'm away from home and out of my "comfort zone" and away from my network of people who can take care of me, I do whatever is necessary to avoid any unnecessary emergencies. I pay extra close attention to what I eat, how much, and when. I also keep a sharp eye on how much insulin I have in me at any given time.

PART TWO of the same blog,

What's kind of funny, but not really, is I wrote the first part of this blog before I went to sleep the other night and saved it on my computer. Now here it is Thursday night and I am able to come back and finish it and tell you what happened the rest of that night.

Amazingly, after I went to bed, I woke up twice that night due to hypoglycemia! It turns out I guess I DID take too much insulin and that my fears came true. Thankfully, I remembered to set my glucose bottle by my suitcase!

Moral of the story: Just when I thought I had written about my good diabetes care, the rest of the night happened and my excessive exercise and insulin intake made me feel otherwise!

I guess that's what I get for being cocky?! Thanks for reading today. -Andy

This kind of thing happens to me every time I travel. When I’m away from home it seems more times than not, I’ll get a hypo wake-up call in the middle of the night. So there I am… in a strange room, confused, bewildered and there always seems to be a desk chair leg between my pinky toe and where I think I need to go. I’m a creature of habit and when my “habits” aren’t around, balancing my blood sugars can be tough. I’ve learned my lessons the hard way so now when I stay in a hotel room I keep my juice, glucose tabs, and cell phone on the nightstand and I leave the bathroom light on in hopes of keeping that darn chair leg away from my pinky toe!
