My endo got back to me about the lows I've been experiencing on Glyburide. His reply: stop taking it. Once again, we're going to a "trial of diet and exercise." Excuse me? Didn't we just do this last month? I just checked the prescription bottle: Feb. 8.

I replied that we've tried diet and exercise twice in the last four months and frankly it didn't work. He asked me to just try it. He seems to think I'm far enough away from the pregnancy and its crazy hormones that diet and exercise just might work. I reminded him that it didn't work in the beginning of February either.

In fact, diet and exercise hasn't worked for me since 2005. Before I was pregnant I was taking oral meds to stimulate pancreatic function, then switched to insulin for pregnancy.

He said, "It would be nice if you could control it with diet and exercise." I agree, it would be nice, but I've been there, tried that, and it hasn't worked. Why all of a sudden should my pancreas decide to work? It's rather frustrating that I have to play this little game again.

I wish I could just find a happy medium where my blood sugars are stable all the time, regardless of what I eat, when I eat or if, when and how hard I exercise. I guess that happy medium would be called non-diabetic land. That must be a lovely place to live.

The doctor is giving this an 80 percent chance of working this time. I asked if he wanted to put a friendly wager on it. I'd be ecstatic if he won, but I'm not betting on it.

MikeDurbinMike was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on December 29, 2008, and congestive heart failure the very next day. Talk about a double whammy for anyone, let alone a 24 year old.  He didn’t have to come up with New Year’s resolutions that year; his doctors did that for him.  That kind of humor has been instrumental in keeping him, and those around him, going over the last year and a half.
