Things just keep getting better and better around here. (to be read in a dripping-with-sarcasm tone of voice.)

I got a phone call from the nurse this morning that Olivia had shown up in her office shortly after gym started, complaining of shortness of breath. The nurse took her blood pressure and it was 120/100. I called Olivia's pediatrician. Four bp readings later, she was 120/96. And no one has a clue as to what's going on.

She says she feels fine. She doesn't feel like her heart is racing, she doesn't feel sick, nothing. She hadn't even started running around in gym when this happened.

The pediatrician didn't want to see her today. She suggested I have the school nurse check Olivia's blood pressure tomorrow, a couple of times during the day. She also said that if it flared up again tonight, that I was to take her to the ER.

Blah.

So, one more thing to add to the list of crap that's going on with Olivia right now. This one is kind of scary. Why would a kid her age have high blood pressure? It could have been situational - an argument with a friend, nerves over a test, although she says none of that happened. She doesn't have high cholesterol - it's checked every year and it's very low.

Maybe it's the Zantac. I spoke to the doctor about that and she didn't think that was very likely. I guess I'll do some research online to see if that's a side effect of that medication.

The fun never stops around here....*sigh*

Sorry that she's having such a tough time, along with you. And like you, I would also do some investigating.

Julia,

What is crazy about that is looking at the side effects of Zantac. Shortness of breath, fast or slow heart rate. How can they not think it's the Zantac? Sometimes I swear I don't trust these doctors. I have a friend who has a 2 year old with Hepatoblastoma(cancer of liver). If she wasn't online talking to other parents and on top of the situation they would of killed that child twice with major screw up's. It has really made me question the medical community?
Do all the research you can and go with your gut! Or get a second opinion. Stay strong and tough!! Your doing a great job of being on top of things..
We will keep you in our prayers!!

Next "stupid" question... what is Olivia's BP like when she is having those stomach issues? And what was her BG like when she was having the high BP issues?

Follow-up is, what sort of anxiety issues might she be having and repressing (or suppressing), either by choice ("I'm grown up and don't need to tell") or by social necessity ("Don't bother me with that", "You have to do it anyway", "Teenagers aren't supposed to show their emotions", "Suck it up and get on with it")???? This one may be very hard for you to get to as a Mom. Usual teen options are the BFF of the month, a sibling, a diary, or a favorite stuffed animal...

I have been on blood pressure medication for two years now - I never expected that I'd have this issue in my twenties, but it's what I'm dealing with as part of the diabetes package. ;)

I have a pressure meter at home and I check it when I'm feeling bizarre. Or even when I'm feeling completely normal, just to gauge what's going on. I know it's just another thing to monitor (like we don't have enough), but knowing when it spiked helped me identify causes and gave me enough information to make concrete decisions with my doctor.

Tell O I said hi!

Julia lives behind the Tofu Curtain, in the Pioneer Valley, in Western Massachusetts. It's a nice place. She likes it there. Her eldest daughter, Olivia, has type 1 diabetes. She's also 13. It's a real toss-up as to which is more difficult -- the diabetes or the teen-age drama. (Read More)
