I want to be the Little Mermaid. I want my ocean life to turn to land. I want to suddenly be able to cross to the other side. I want a day without diabetes. Just one day.

If I could imagine a day without diabetes... it would be hard to know where to start. Maybe I'd go jogging and not worry about getting low hours later. Maybe I would make my day on a holiday so I could eat anything I wanted without thinking about boluses and temp basals.

Certainly I would rejoice in not being glued to an insulin pump and infusion set. I would get rid of the calluses on my fingers from the eight finger sticks a day. I wouldn't worry about heightened risks for heart disease, glaucoma, or even the common cold.

I would diet and never get low after salad dinners. I would get sick and not stress about the high blood sugars that come along. (Not to say I would choose to get sick, but it would be so bittersweet.) I would wear any bracelet I wanted instead of the permanent medic alert on my wrist.

I would make any decision at any time and not consider how it would affect my blood sugar (or how my blood sugar will affect it). I would wear any style or fashion without special pump clips or thigh straps. I would carry the smallest purse filled with everything BUT meters, glucose tabs, batteries and quarters.

I would go bowling with my friends no matter the size of my dinner. I would go on a long drive without packing a cooler full of juice. I would sit in the middle seat on any row and not stress that I might need to leave early to treat a low.

I would drink the biggest Dr. Pepper and not feel guilty. I would sit through a meal and not count every thing that touched my lips. I would be uninhibited, unattached.

This is my perfect day, my fantasy world. This is my fairy tale.
