I haven't made it a full week without insulin and things are looking pretty scary already. But I'm humoring my doctor and playing along with this little experiement. The sad part is, I'm not even taking post-meal readings, just fasting, premeal and bedtime. And the results are, to me at least, unacceptable.
I really don't like having high blood sugar. It's not just seeing high numbers on the meter that bothers me. It's the little things, like the insatiable hunger and thirst, the fatigue and blurry vision. I don't know how high blood sugar has to be before it affects your vision, but it seems lately, my sight is fuzzy again, especially in the evenings. Really annoying because I want to get new glasses, but I need my vision to be stable before making that kind of investment.
I like to be under 100 before meals. That's not really happenening. OK, it's not even close to happening. More like under 200. And that's BEFORE eating.
I do a lot better these days about not freaking out if I'm a little high, or even very high, but I still don't like it. Let's just say, I'm not letting in ruin my day, but I'm also not doing a happy dance.
So, the plan was for me to just keep taking 500mg metformin at breakfast and dinner, and in a week, get back to my doctor with my readings. If they were out of range, the first step would be to double the metformin. After one day--a day that included eating healthy and exercising--and my readings were already too high for my liking. By the second morning, I e-mailed the doctor to say I'm doubling the metforming NOW.
That was Friday. It's now Monday and things haven't gotten much better. Initially, when this wasn't working out, I thought I'd get back to him by Monday to say, "OK, what next?" Now that Monday's here, I'm reviewing my readings in context of my meal choices and realizing I really went off the deep end this weekend.
First came Friday's Chick-Fil-A incident, followed by pizza night on Saturday. In my defence, it was a whole wheat Boboli, with organic sauce and 2% cheese, but still, half a pie does not make for a blood sugar friendly meal. Then Sunday was the Superbowl, a total carb-fest complete with stromboli and a 6-foot sub. I was in white flour heaven, even if I did have to leave early to put the littlest Giants fan to bed. (Of course, I could also blame the stress of the game for my high blood sugar. What a nailbiter that turned out to be!)
Before I jump the gun and ask my doctor what to do next, I'm going to take a few days to put forth a serious effort to clean up my diet again and make sure I'm doing my part toward getting my blood sugar healthy again. Just as soon as I finish off the stromboli.
