After Olivia's run of high blood sugars over Christmas, I decided yesterday (the 26th) to give her a temporary basal rate. I think the combination of all the extra food around plus not being in school and being active is what's sent her blood sugars thru the roof. Well, that and not testing. That probably didn't help either. (Boy, do I need an eye rolling smiley right about now.)
I'm hoping that I wasn't too aggressive with the increases in her basal rates. She was getting 37.4 basal units per day and now she's up to 41.3. It's not a huge increase, but I do get worried when I make these changes.
The endocrinologist and CDE always tell me to make one rate change at a time. Olivia has 6 basal rates over a 24 hour period. Because her highs were coming at all times of the day, I decided to change them all instead of doing one and waiting two days. I hope she won't bottom out from it. The last time I did this, I was far more aggressive, and she did crash a couple of times. Never to the point of passing out, but still. It wasn't pretty.
She wanted to go spend the day at her friend's house today, so I dropped her off with three vials of glucose tablets and strict instructions to check her blood sugars every hour to hour and a half. I really hope she does this.
While she's gone, I'm going to set up her new cell phone. I think that tool right there is going to be my sanity saver. I can text her to tell her to check her blood sugar and she can text me back her number. Hopefully this will eliminate some of the anger we each get over this situation. We're both tired of it.
