I've often thought about making some sort of subtle statement around the holidays regarding diabetes. It's a tough time of the year when you have diabetes - there are so many sugar-laden treats around and your schedule is usually out of whack so blood sugars and testing can fall by the wayside in the whirl of activities.
So for the last few months, I've been saving Olivia's insulin bottles. I planned on putting them on a string of lights once I had enough and then putting them on the tree.
Last night, I happened to be in CVS, getting my thyroid medication (and gummy bears, as you do) and I saw these Tiny Lights and I thought "Perfect!" I grabbed a box and was on my way.
After Olivia went to bed, I got out the bottles and my scissors and went to town. I reamed out the rubber bit in the top of the bottle and inserted each light. I had, amazingly, exactly 20 bottles, which is exactly how many lights are in one box of Tiny Lights.

Et voila! One strand of insulin bottle lights.

Downside: The lights run on batteries and the batteries do not power them for very long. I am going to hunt for a plug in version of Tiny Lights. Either that or remove more material from the bottle top and try a standard strand of lights. I'll need more bottles, though, since most standard strands come 50 to a string.
Next up? Test strip container garlands on used tubing.

Love it!
:) never ever did I think of that. (Test strip garlands, sure, but anything to do with insulin bottles...not so much.)
Cute.
What a fantastic idea. Am now saving insulin bottles for next year.
Anybody want to buy a test strip garland? I have the makings for several. :)
So what did Julia think of this? Usually we like to downplay diabetes, not decorate it!!!
