Have you seen this - the Glucophone?
It's a cell phone and glucometer all in one. Holy digital dynamite, Batman!
The website says "A text message of the results can be transmitted to anyone the patient authorizes enabling real-time remote monitoring. The GlucoPhone helps minimize the daily hassles associated with the treatment of the disease...."
They seem to be thinking about your doctor or your CDE getting the blood test results, which might be good sometimes.
But I really thought of all our parents of PWD here in the blogosphere, especially my fellow "blogabeter" Julia. You may recall her having some trouble with her teenager recently.
Wouldn't it be great for teens or even younger kids to just auto-text their parents when they test their blood sugars? One less step for them to remember. Plus, I recall feeling very resentful of having to contact my parents about ANYTHING, so this takes it out of their hands.
The gadget looks like a normal, albeit somewhat large, cell phone. I got the giggles imagining some gigantic monstrosity - like the cell phones of yore. In the early '90s a cell phone was about the size of a carton of cigarettes. Yes, I said CARTON, not pack. And they weighed a couple of pounds. I can see the day not far off when a gadget the size of today's cell phone will be your mp3 player, phone, glucose meter, insulin pump, camera, pda and heavens only knows what else. Pretty cool.
But, and it's a BIG BUT - it's still not a cure.
