from the Minimed website

Olivia uses a Minimed Paradigm pump - the 715 model. We have had no issues with it (knock wood, turn around three times, go outside and spit). I think I've called the help line once in the last three years.

She uses the Silhouette infusion sites. The angled cannula seems to be better for her. The sites that go straight in would bend and crimp. That's not to say she hasn't had the occasional problem with the Sils, but for the most part, they've been fine.

The last 10 or so site changes, though, have been different. The needle that plunges the cannula into her body (bleurgh) is bending. Really bending, like at a 90 degree angle. And it hurts a lot.

Of course, I haven't saved any of these to take pictures of or to send back to Minimed. I'm going to call them, I guess, and see what they have to say. I don't need to have the sites replaced - we have plenty of supplies - but it would be nice to know if other people have complained about this.

Anyone out there have this problem? Or are we just special?

Hi,
I use the same sites & I haven't had that problem (knock on wood!), maybe the problem is the inserter (if you use it). I put the site in on my own and it seems to work fine ... hope you're able to resolve the problem!

I never had a problem with the needle bending when I inserted them manually. It wasn't until I tried to use the SilSerter that the needles would bend. I quit using them when I started using a MiniMed pump.

Julia: I have used Sils before an had the same problem. I use an Animas IR1250 pump, but it uses luer lock infusion sets, so I was able to use the Sils I already had from my Minimed pump. I called Animas to find out what was up with the bending needles and they suggested that it was caused by scar tissue. I don't know how long Olivia has had diabetes or has used a pump, but that explanation made sense to me. I've had diabetes for nearly 27 years and have used a pump for 5 years. Sometimes, I tend to have some absorption issues even though I rotate my sites. I switched to an infustion set (also luer lock) distributed by Animas Corp called "Inset". It comes with it's own automatic inserter attached. You can check it out at: https://estore.animascorp.com/.

Good Luck!

Julia lives behind the Tofu Curtain, in the Pioneer Valley, in Western Massachusetts. It's a nice place. She likes it there. Her eldest daughter, Olivia, has type 1 diabetes. She's also 13. It's a real toss-up as to which is more difficult -- the diabetes or the teen-age drama. (Read More)
