In yesterday's post I talked about going to my first insulin pump class. I said that I was a little leery about going and that I wasn't sure what to expect. Well, after spending about three hours learning about the pump I'm still not sure. I guess I'm just not ready to switch over to this method of diabetes control. I still can't imagine being hooked to that little thing all the time! I realize that I could still remove it and go back to the manual injection routine, I'm JUST NOT READY YET. One thing I did learn was that I might be ready for an "insulin pen".

The nurses and I discussed starting with a Novolog pen. I have never used one but I'm beginning to think that I am the only type 1 out there that hasn't! GOSH! I GUESS I'M A LITTLE OLD SCHOOL!? As many of you may have already read, I still carry around a freaking MAN PURSE! I also use that big odd-shaped blue thing that keeps my insulin cold. I still put that thing in the freezer every night and pull it out each morning so I can keep my insulin cold all day. I basically just learned TODAY that not everybody keeps there insulin cold like me! Apparently, from what I understand your insulin should stay good for about 28 days without being kept cold all the time.

So after my pump class today I realized that I switch to a different method every couple of years. I first started on the pre-mixed 70/30 insulin. That lasted me up until about 5 years ago when I switched to Lantus and Novolog. It seems now I am not quite ready for the pump, but yet it might be time to start using the pen. The days of keeping my insulin cool and freezing my little "odd-shaped blue thing" are soon to be over. That might actually lead to ditching the man purse one day and actually being up to speed on what's new in diabetes care. I can only imagine what it might be like to one day have a continuous glucose monitor or a "closed-loop system" of some kind. Am I to young to start feeling old? , Oh my!

As always please feel free to leave your thoughts or comments below. Thank you -Andy.
