I am still struggling with the Symlin. At 30 mcg for a week and a half, I'm experiencing nausea after almost every use. It doesn't last more than an hour, but it's still a major inconvenience that I expected to be gone by now. And because I can't raise it from 30 mcg, I am seeing more harm than good in my blood sugars. My averages are now over 215 and my post-meal numbers are sticking in the high 200s.

I've promised myself that I will give it at least one full use though so I will stick it out until the Symlin pen is empty. I have started raising my mealtime insulin from 50% to 65% to combat some of the highs and I've noticed slight improvements. I don't expect my next A1c to be at all improved though.

I also decided to go back on the Metformin this morning and started at 250 mg. I'm crossing my fingers for no stomach trouble because I desperately need the extra "oomph" that the Metformin gives me. My skin is breaking out. I'm losing more hair than I have in past months. And I'm seeing a lot of the same struggles with my blood sugars that I did prior to using Metformin before. It's all thanks to the PCOS, but it also doesn't help the diabetes.

I've also started an accountability pact with a fellow diabetic. My goal is the following:

  • At least 5 blood sugar checks per day
  • 3 to 4 workouts per week
  • One dessert splurge per week (restaurant dessert, fast food, etc)

Day 1 of that begins today and I'm on track with 2 checks today and 1 workout this week. I haven't splurged on dessert yet. Overall, I'm seeking better blood sugars and also weight loss. Maybe between all these efforts, something will give.

I was really hopeful that Symlin might provide the answer for me, but honestly it doesn't look like it's going to be sticking around. Metformin's stomach troubles are bad enough. I really don't need both. Or maybe they'll cancel each other out. One can only hope.

MikeDurbinMike was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on December 29, 2008, and congestive heart failure the very next day. Talk about a double whammy for anyone, let alone a 24 year old.  He didn’t have to come up with New Year’s resolutions that year; his doctors did that for him.  That kind of humor has been instrumental in keeping him, and those around him, going over the last year and a half.
