How often do you worry about diabetes complications?

I'm currently recovering from a fairly unexpected blood sugar of 49. It's the lowest I've been all week despite battling a multitude of lows. It really doesn't feel good. Especially after I've just finished an intense Jillian Michaels' workout (30 Day Shred) and just had to guzzle Coke and snacks.

Even before starting the Symlin on Tuesday evening, I was having lows at two odd times of the day. Morning and early evening after work. I'd wake up lower than I'd like, spike through the morning and afternoon and drop low almost immediately after leaving work. Symlin has only complicated this issue.

Today was the worst low of them all. After watching the Dexcom sit above 200 all day long, I had a salad with waffle fries for dinner. I bolused for the 204 prior to the meal on top of the fries and chicken. Then I decided to drink a Coke. 10 units of Humalog. An accurate bolus.

Less than two hours later, I put the 30 Day Shred video on level 1 (because I'm currently a wimp and really out of shape despite weeks of running and yoga and Jillian Michaels really kicks your butt). I soared through the 20 minutes of strength, cardio, and abs with a few moments of "I'm going to die!" but nothing unusual.

At the end of the session, the Dexcom started buzzing. A sound that I've heard all day with the "high: above 260" notifications. This one was on the opposite end "low: below 80." Thanks, Dexcom. Seriously...because I didn't quite feel this one yet. The meter clocked in at 49 though. Not a number that I want to see without symptoms. And I didn't even do Symlin with my salad.

I'm not exactly sure of the solution here. It appears that my overall Humalog needs are down considering my corrections are sending me low. Yet I'm seeing spikes after meals that are steady in the 200 range for several hours. It's almost as if the Humalog itself is having an extended delay.

Tomorrow is supposed to be the increase of Symlin to 30 mcg from 15 mcg. I guess I will stick with that (side effects have been very tolerable with only some minor stomach upset between meals) and perhaps lower something else. But what? Lantus? Corrections? Insulin to carb ratio (that's already cut 30-40% with the Symlin)?

I may give the numbers through the weekend before changing my insulin. Perhaps I can see some differences with the 30 mcg that might shed some light on what to do. I'm also planning a run tomorrow as well as another workout on Sunday so my activity is definitely up. I don't want to risk anything by having lows, but I also don't want to push myself too high.

Oh the options and the lack of true solutions. What to do...
